Therefore, a distinction must be made. Without such a distinction, even mentioning the ultimate essence of Bodhicitta would be mere words. Secondly, regarding the difference in intention, it is said, "With minds that do not turn back." From what do they not turn back? Firstly, with the force of a strong pull, they do not turn back from the intention to protect others. Like a child with crippled hands being carried away by water, without hands to hold on to, just as one seeks help from someone with hands on dry land, so too, beings who are close, being carried away by the waters of karma and afflictions in the causal stage, and by the four great rivers of suffering in the resultant stage, with an unbearable mind, when one is unable to hold on like having crippled hands, one takes refuge in the Three Jewels, who are like those with hands. Once one attains the essence of Bodhi: "For the sake of the holy, refuge is only the Buddha. The Sage has the Dharmakaya, and the Sangha is also ultimate in that." Or, "The one refuge for all beings, in truth, is the Buddha." In this way, one transforms into the nature of the Three Jewels. Until one transforms into that, one must not turn back from the intention to take refuge for the sake of others, no matter what the circumstances. Geshe Gonpa also said, "To become a protector for others is meaningful." Therefore, in the Ornament of the Mahayana Sutras, it says: "Whoever has entered to liberate many beings, and is skilled in going to all vehicles of wisdom, whoever has one taste for Nirvana and Samsara, such a wise one should be known here as an all-goer." Among the four all-goers mentioned, the one who goes to all sentient beings is the most important. The three lineages that benefit all sentient beings should be placed among the three who have passed beyond sorrow. To that, one must place them on the path of the three vehicles. To that, being skilled in all vehicles through wisdom is a branch of that other all-goer. Thirdly, regarding the difference in the basis, although no difference is mentioned for the Buddha and Dharma, for the Sangha, it is specifically mentioned as the Bodhisattva Sangha who do not turn back. That is, regarding not turning back from the Dharma, it is said to be the eighth Bhumi, and it is also said to be above the first Bhumi. In the Prajnaparamita, it is also said to be above the stage of ascertainment.

Thus it is said, from the stage of ascertainment onwards, those Bodhisattvas who abide on the paths of seeing and meditation are the assembly of the irreversible. Thus, from then on, one becomes a person in whom that sign appears. Those with good and aspirational lineages, whose minds are steadfast and excellent, the countless three Bodhisattvas, are said to be constantly diligent. In this way, that Dharma assembly has existed from the path itself. The term "Arya" also means long-lasting, from the very first arising of the mind, it is longer-lasting than all worldly beings, Shravakas, and Pratyekabuddhas. It is not that Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas are not taken as refuge because their blessings are small or inferior, but because the paths are different. For example, going to Vajrasana (Bodh Gaya) is like a companion who is only going as far as Tölung (present-day Toelung Dechen County in Lhasa), which is of no help. Even if one initially sets out for India, changing one's mind midway will not succeed, so it is said to be irreversible. Thus, to accomplish omniscience for the sake of others, it will not be accomplished without relying on the blessings of the Three Jewels. Therefore, one must rely on them. Geshe Tonpa said: No matter how famous the efforts of this life are, if there is no such arising stage, one will not attain Buddhahood no matter how long one practices. Buddhahood is attained by relying on the increase of Vipaka and cause-similarity. It is not just that, but by relying on the blessings of Bodhicitta, even small roots of virtue become vast, so one can attain Buddhahood. It is not just that, but one can finally attain Buddhahood by relying on the blessings of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. Dromtönpa placed his right palm on the crown of Arya Avalokiteshvara's head, and in that vision, it appeared that he went before all the Buddhas of the ten directions, in front of some he joined his palms, from some he received teachings, in front of some he practiced pure conduct, and in front of some he practiced the conduct of a Bodhisattva for as many eons as there are grains of sand in the Ganges. When he raised his hand, it is said that Avalokiteshvara was sitting in front of him with his palms joined. When this was reported to Potowa, he said that it was the completion of the accumulation of merit, which was no different from actually performing those deeds. Therefore, the former is definitive meaning. Furthermore, the guide Sang
