The so-called "Essence of Differentiating Wisdom" is also to establish the meaning of the essence of the root of the Middle Way. Chandrakirti's "Entering the Middle Way" is also said to be for entering that meaning. Similarly, the "Ornament of the Middle Way" and the "Appearance of the Middle Way" are all said to clarify and manifest that meaning. Second, regarding how to abide in the continuum of realized wisdom, there are two parts: introducing the meaning of meditation and instructing on the method of abiding. The first part is: Therefore, since the self-nature of all phenomena is unobtainable, therefore, meditating on selflessness itself is meditating on wisdom. Thus it is said. That is to say, since all phenomena are established as being without self-nature through the above reasoning, therefore, regarding the self-nature of all phenomena included by the grasped and the grasper, or included by the aggregates, elements, and sense bases, realizing that they are unobtainable in either the existent or the non-existent. Therefore, meditating on the selflessness of persons and the selflessness of phenomena themselves is meditating on the wisdom that knows the ultimate reality of all phenomena. Sharawa said: One's own school admits that knowable forms, etc., are established as substantial entities of the grasper and the grasped, etc., and considers them to be empty of the person fabricated by outsiders, while the Yogacara school admits that consciousness-only is established as the substantial entity of other-powered, and considers it to be empty of both the grasper and the grasped. For these people, there is no meditation on ultimate wisdom, as stated in the sutras and treatises of the Middle Way: The mundane emptiness is of the heretics. Therefore, meditating on not being established as any entity of the existent and the non-existent, that alone is meditating on ultimate wisdom, as it is declared. Second, regarding instructing on the method of abiding, there are two parts: the main text and explaining its reason. The first part is: When wisdom does not see all the self-natures of phenomena, explaining the reason for wisdom itself, meditate on non-conceptualization. Thus it is said. That is to say, if the knowable is established as being without self-nature by wisdom, then is wisdom itself established as being without self-nature or not? If it is not established, then all phenomena cannot be established as being without self-nature. If it is established, then how is wisdom itself

If it is thought to be established in this way, then, as previously stated, through the wisdom of individual examination, by examining all knowable phenomena, just as one does not see the self-nature of anything, so too, that wisdom of individual examination engages in reasoning in the very nature of non-self-existence. When existence and non-existence do not remain before the mind, then there is no other form, and it is completely pacified without an object. As it is said, in Jowo's (Atisha's) instructions on the Middle Way: 'Just as fire arises from rubbing two sticks, and when the sticks are exhausted, the fire naturally subsides,' similarly, by knowing that the knowable is not established, knowledge itself, through the manner of self-pacification, becomes aware of emptiness, the very nature of reality. Therefore, in the instructions on the Middle Way, it is said: 'Once all phenomena with characteristics of self and generalities are established as non-existent, that wisdom itself is luminous without appearance, free from all elaborations, and not established as the essence of anything. Having eliminated all faults such as sinking and agitation, in that interval, the consciousness does not conceptualize anything, does not grasp anything, and abandons all mindfulness and attention. Until the enemy of conceptualization or the thief of afflictions arises, one should keep the consciousness in such a state.' As it is said, one should remain and meditate in that non-conceptual wisdom, even in the mere act of doing, without any conceptualization. This is the meaning. Secondly, explaining the reason for this, there are two reasons why one must meditate on non-conceptualization in order to abandon samsara and attain the supreme state of nirvana, and the establishment of this with scripture. First, (the reason is): 'This existence arises from conceptualization; it is the nature of conceptualization. Therefore, completely abandoning conceptualization is the supreme nirvana.' Thus it is said. Also, in wisdom (prajna), conceptualization is negated, and why is so much fault seen in conceptualization? Generally, karma and afflictions are said to be the truth of origin, and all of that is merely conceptualization. All conceptualizations are included in the two conceptualizations of self and phenomena. All three realms of existence arise from conceptualizing self, and that also arises from conceptualizing phenomena. Based on the concept of self, one distinguishes self and others as different, and one also distinguishes between the desirable, the undesirable, and the ordinary aspects of others.
