There are four views on the unconditioned cessation: two are space, and three are suchness. Since the unconditioned itself is established as without inherent existence, there is no need for further investigation. In works such as the Ornament of the Middle Way, it is pointed out that pervasive things like space cannot be established as one because they are related to multiple directions. The same reasoning applies to all who assert the unconditioned as a real entity. If the unconditioned is not accepted as knowable, then by that very fact it is established as without inherent existence. If it is accepted as knowable, then because it is related to sequential cognition, it becomes momentary like cognition, and therefore cannot be established as unconditioned. Therefore, according to the principle that "whatever is analyzed, that does not have singleness; whatever does not have singleness, that does not have multiplicity," all phenomena are without inherent existence because they are free from one and many, which is established by analyzing only the aggregates of form. Furthermore, if we analyze the nature of the other four aggregates, such as feeling, they are also without inherent existence because they are free from one and many. Just because feeling is of three kinds—pleasant, painful, and neutral—it cannot be established as one. And each of these is divided into six each from the perspective of support and object, totaling eighteen. Perception is also divided into small perception, large perception, and immeasurable perception; if divided by realm, there are three; if divided by support and object, there are six; and each has distinctions in grasping at characteristics. There are forty-nine mental formations that are associated with mind, and fourteen or twenty-three, etc., that are not associated with mind, which are various. Consciousness exists in the eight or six collections, so there is nothing that can be established as one. And each of these arises by focusing on various objects, and the ways of arising are various, so they cannot be established as one. If analyzed from the perspective of time, the states of feeling, etc., are different in the three times of past, future, and present. And each of these has differences of before and after from year and month to moment, which are only temporary, and there is nothing that can be established as one. If one thinks that the moment can be established as one, then, since the moment has an end, the beginning and middle must also be examined. Therefore, since the moment has three parts, the world does not exist for just one moment.

The beginning, middle, and end, if contemplated as being like a moment, the beginning, middle, and end, in that way, become one. Therefore, since many do not arise either, the nature of one and many is imperceptible, therefore it is certain to be without inherent existence. Thus, the previous proposition is established. The objects to be refuted by those reasonings are the aggregates and so forth. Putowa said that on that occasion, those three reasonings are dependent origination, the diamond sliver, and being separate from one and many. Geshe Tonpa's teacher, Jowo Wangchuk Shyönnu, from Aryadeva's Madhyamaka scriptures: 'On a rope, one apprehends a snake. Seeing the rope is meaningless. If one sees its parts, on that too, knowing it as a snake is a delusion.' He said that by applying that to any object, through the reasoning of being separate from one and many, even those who do not know the alphabet can understand emptiness well. He invited the mouth and la of meritorious activities to tents and so forth. When explaining the offerings, he asked, 'Isn't your tent said to be an accumulation of many poles? If the poles are separated, can a tent be formed?' After thinking for a moment, they understood and admitted it. Then he asked, 'Isn't a pole said to be an accumulation of many threads? If the threads are separated, can a pole be formed?' Then he asked, 'Isn't a thread said to be an accumulation of many strands of hair? If the hairs are separated, can a thread be formed?' Then he divided the hairs into tips, roots, and knots and asked. After thinking for a moment, they understood and admitted it. 'On a pole, one apprehends a tent. Seeing the pole is meaningless. If one sees its parts, on that too, knowing it as a tent is a delusion.' He applied it in that way. He invited the mouth and la of meritorious activities to houses and so forth. When explaining the offerings, he asked, 'Isn't your house said to be an accumulation of many stones and wood? If the stones and wood are separated, can a house be formed?' Finally, he even divided the dust into directional parts. After they admitted it, 'On stones and wood, one apprehends a house. Seeing the stones and wood is meaningless. If one sees its parts, on that too, knowing it as a house is a delusion.' He applied it in that way, it is said. Thus, he briefly explained how the selflessness of phenomena is established by the three reasonings. Second, that very Madhyamaka
