Concerning the detailed explanation of these methods, there are two methods: ascertaining the meaning of the knowable selflessness through reasoning, and integrating the understanding of wisdom into the continuum. First, there are two ways: direct explanation, and summarizing and presenting here what is extensively explained in the great Madhyamaka treatises. First, explaining the reasoning or arguments used to ascertain the meaning of the knowable selflessness. Putowa said: Following the light of Madhyamaka, Tibet has accomplished four great arguments. All arguments are categorized into one and many separation and dependent origination. Among them, all arguments that prevent production are called dependent origination. Here, the four-fold production cessation is not mentioned. Analyzing from the perspective of the result, there is production cessation of existence and non-existence; analyzing from the perspective of the cause, there is the vajra cūrṇa (diamond slivers); this name was also given by the teacher Kamalaśīla. Analyzing both cause and result, it is the argument of one and many separation. As it is said, among the two arguments, first, the dependent origination argument that prevents production also has two. First, analyzing from the perspective of the result, the argument of production cessation of existence and non-existence is: The production of existence is unreasonable, like a flower in the sky does not exist. The fault lies in the absurd inference of both, both do not arise. As it is said. That is, the previously promised emptiness of inherent existence of the aggregates and other phenomena has not been established. If one thinks that there is a true knowable thing, to prevent this wrong notion, if it exists, it must exist in cause and effect. Analyzing from the perspective of the result, the aggregates and so on are produced as existence, non-existence, or the nature of both. If one thinks that the production of existence is reasonable, that is also unreasonable, because existence is already established and does not need causes and conditions to produce. If existence arises in its own nature, then there will be no time when it does not arise, and production will also become endless. Then, will non-existence arise? That is also unreasonable, like a flower in the sky. Even with hundreds of millions of causes, one cannot transform non-existence into existence. Because, no matter how powerful the cause is, it cannot produce non-existence. If non-existence arises from a cause, then because there is no difference, it will also arise from a non-cause.

And also, the flowers in the sky and the horns of rabbits will grow. Furthermore, if one thinks that the nature of a great fruit is non-existent, but it arises from both existence and non-existence as a cause, that is also unreasonable. If one examines whether it exists after arising or exists without arising, then even the existence as a cause cannot be established. Because existence and non-existence are contradictory, it is not reasonable for it to be both. Moreover, regarding the arising of what exists, if what has already arisen arises again, then arising will become endless, and so on. Regarding the arising of what does not exist, it contradicts the place of the cause, like a flower in the sky. Because it would fall into both of the faults mentioned earlier. It is also not possible for results, aggregates, etc., to arise from both existence and non-existence. As it is said in the Seventy Stanzas on Emptiness: 'What exists does not arise because it exists; what does not exist does not arise because it does not exist; because the dharmas are incompatible, neither arises.' Secondly, the reasoning of the Vajra Splinter, which examines from the perspective of the cause, is: 'Things do not arise from themselves, nor from others, nor from both; because there is no cause, there is no thing; therefore, by nature, there is no self-existence.' It is said that if one thinks that aggregates, etc., are truly existent as causal things, then, if one examines these aggregates, etc., from the perspective of the cause, do the aggregates, etc., arise from their own cause, or from another, or from both, or from no cause? There are no such four extremes. Among these, the assertion that it arises from itself is unreasonable. As it is said: 'If it does not exist, what will be the condition? If it exists, what will the condition do?' According to this reasoning, does it arise from what is self-established or from what is not established? If it arises from what is established, then arising will become meaningless and endless. If it arises from what is not established, then just as the nature of what is to be produced is not established, the producer is also not established, therefore it is non-existent. Because what does not exist is empty of all abilities, it cannot be a cause, nor can it be a result. Therefore, the real things of aggregates, etc., do not arise from themselves from the perspective of the cause. Even if it is said that it arises from another, the other itself cannot be established. If the result is self-established, then it will become the previous fault of not needing to be produced and being endless. If it is not self-established, then without dependence, how can it become another? As it is said: 'The other depends on the other to be other.'
