Thus it is said. Lord Atisha also said, as it is stated in the Vimalakirti Sutra, "The view of the aggregates is the root of Buddhism." Thus it is said. First, I meditate on the impermanence of going from this world to the next, seeking refuge from suffering and fear, and meditate on taking refuge in the Buddha. Then, because the Buddha protects, the Dharma also protects, so I meditate on the karmic results of doing this action, such as being born in the lower realms. Sometimes, after impermanence, I meditate on how much suffering I would have to endure if I were born in the three lower realms from this world to the next. Then, I realize that the only refuge from the suffering of the three lower realms is the Three Jewels, and I meditate on taking refuge in them. Then, those methods that protect me from the lower realms also protect by reversing the cause of those realms, so I recognize the causes of the lower and higher realms and abandon and cultivate them. Then, I am weary of the suffering of impermanence and the continuous cycle of cause and effect in samsara, and I meditate on generating renunciation, wanting to be liberated from it. When I wander in samsara, all beings have been my mothers, and when I am their mother, they are tormented by various sufferings, and I meditate on compassion based on my own experience. Then, from then on, in order to establish all beings in the state of Buddhahood, I generate the great Bodhicitta, thinking that I must attain that state myself. Then, in order to attain great Bodhi for the sake of others, I realize that I must enter that cause, take the vows of entering, and learn the higher discipline and the two minds. When these methods become stable, one cannot attain omniscience because merely relying on methods does not eliminate attachment to things. And because one knows that samsara is long, that there are many beings to be tamed, and that their actions are evil, when one is tormented by the suffering of one's own samsara, like in the story of the monkey, one becomes discouraged thinking that one cannot bear the burden of so many beings in endless samsara, and there is even a danger of losing compassion. Therefore, first meditate on the absence of self in one's own continuum.

Even if you meditate, until loving-kindness and compassion are stable, hold sentient beings as real persons and meditate on these two. Then, since all sentient beings and their sufferings are truly existent, thinking, 'Can I not even eliminate the suffering of sentient beings?' When sorrow reaches its limit, also meditate that other sentient beings do not exist as real persons. Then, even if one dharma entity is established, thinking, 'Can I not even eliminate the truly existent suffering?' also meditate that oneself and all sentient beings have no self of dharma. Meditating on these two in sequence is like announcing the death of the queen to the king. The king, being attached to the queen's perfect beauty, was inevitably together with her. Later, due to a special need, the king went to war in another country, and the queen died. If he were told directly from the beginning, the king would vomit blood and die, generating great sorrow. A minister skilled in strategy sent a messenger to ask if the king was well. The king said that everything else was fine, but the queen had a large boil on her forehead. Then, he sent a second, third, and fourth messenger. When asked as before, he learned that the boil had turned into a pustule, the pustule had spread and covered the face, until it was announced that the queen's face had ulcerated, leaving only bones. The king's heart began to loathe it, and he thought, 'It would be better if the queen had already died.' At this time, he was told that the queen had passed away, and the king was very happy, without generating sorrow. Similarly, when the suffering of oneself and others causes sorrow, when the selflessness of the sufferer is proclaimed, one becomes very happy. At this time, the two selflessnesses are proclaimed. Shantideva said: 'Since I and other beings equally do not want suffering and fear, what difference is there between myself and others, that I protect myself and not others?' and 'Those who wish to swiftly protect themselves and others should practice the supreme secret of exchanging self and others.' Thus, by familiarizing oneself with the equality of self and others, the mind of enlightenment arises. This is the key instruction for cultivating the mind of enlightenment. For beginners, cultivating the mind of enlightenment in this way will not be stable. It is necessary to cultivate as Atisha said. Second, the separation of skillful means and wisdom.
