Similarly, afflictions arise again strongly. Even if one only meditates on the selflessness of the person, if one does not abandon the clinging to the aggregates, etc., as true, then, as long as there is clinging to the aggregates, there is self-grasping towards them. If there is self-grasping, there will be karma. From that (karma) will again arise (new) births. As it is said, even the view of self cannot be abandoned. For example, if one mistakes a post for a person, when one goes near it, one will know (that it is a post). However, if one does not knock it down, when one goes far away, one will still mistake it (for a person). Similarly, even if one allows the abandonment of the view of self, if one does not meditate on the selflessness of phenomena, which is the antidote to the obscuration of knowledge, one cannot abandon (the obscuration of knowledge). In order to completely abandon (all) obscurations, one should meditate on it. According to the view of the master Nagarjuna, even the Hearers realize the selflessness of phenomena, but they do not realize that in all phenomena, apart from what is included in their own basis, there is no self. And, because they lack great means, they do not abandon the obscuration of knowledge. Therefore, the yoga of the Mother (Prajnaparamita) is not just wisdom, but is meditated on together with means. Moreover, it is not just once that it is meditated on together with means, but it is to be meditated on constantly with means. As it is said here, the means are the methods of bringing the mind to a state of not straying from the Dharma through meditating on actions, causes, and results, in four non-virtuous ways. By meditating on all conditioned existence as being of the nature of suffering, not even desiring the three realms in dreams, and for the sake of abandoning its cause, the method of generating diligence more quickly than putting out a fire that suddenly breaks out on one's head or clothes. By recognizing all sentient beings of the three realms as one's parents, and because they are all tormented by various sufferings in samsara, thereby measuring by one's own experience, generating perfect compassion, and for the sake of protecting them, vowing to attain omniscience, and the method of training in the five precepts. In order to diligently apply oneself to the cause of obtaining the result, to train well in the three trainings of discipline, which have become a collection of calm abiding, and relying on it to accomplish calm abiding, and relying on it to meditate on insight wisdom. Before all of these, one must also seek refuge from wandering and fear through meditating on the recollection of death, and take refuge in the Three Jewels.

Recognizing this and taking refuge in it, the only important thing is a method to become a Buddha. Furthermore, it says in Engaging in the Middle Way, if there is no generosity, one has to look to others for sustenance, so the practice of emptiness is interrupted. If there is no discipline, one falls into the lower realms, so even meditating on that is interrupted. If there is no patience, one goes to the lower realms, and even if born as a human, one is born with an ugly form, so the lama does not keep one in mind, and one does not obtain the instructions for meditating on emptiness. Lord Atiśa said: "It is said that because I am handsome, all the lamas keep me in mind." If there is no compassion, one falls into the lesser vehicle, so even if one meditates on emptiness, one does not obtain the fruit of Buddhahood. If one does not dedicate the root of virtue to great enlightenment, even meditating on emptiness is interrupted in the bardo. If one does not respect bodhisattvas, one is born in a borderland and does not meet a spiritual friend who teaches emptiness, so it is said that all of these are necessary. In the Stages of Meditation, it also says that at the time of application, propelled by the mind of enlightenment, the seven-limbed practice is performed first. Then, based on accomplishing single-pointed calm abiding on the object, one meditates on patience, superior seeing, and wisdom. At the end, one generates compassion for sentient beings who have not realized emptiness, thinking: "Having perfected my two accumulations, may I attain omniscience and comprehend their suchness," and then one prostrates, makes offerings, and praises all the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas of the ten directions, and dedicates the root of virtue. And at the time of subsequent attainment, it is said to train in all the aspects of skillful means without any being incomplete. In Engaging in Bodhisattva Behavior, it also says that everything from the mind of enlightenment to meditation is the meaning of wisdom. Furthermore, all that is said about not realizing ultimate truth without conventional truths is the meaning of skillful means, but we who call ourselves great Madhyamikas say: "Nothing is needed." But not all the teachings say that way. Thus, meditating together with skillful means, it is important to first stabilize the skillful means without destroying the view of self. In the Sixty Stanzas of Reasoning, it also says: To seek that very thing, in the beginning, one should say that all exists. Understanding things and without attachment, later is emptiness.
