Also, various kinds of clairvoyance as desired will be accomplished. Through its power, one's own accumulation of bodhi will be perfected, and all the purposes of sentient beings will be accomplished. That is (the meaning of the above quote). To this, Sharawa said: If one obtains the actual practice that focuses on emptiness, then there is no need for mental abiding. Isn't that what he practiced? In general, even if one obtains only the five kinds of clairvoyance, there is a risk of losing them, so one needs the clairvoyance that is free from outflows. For that, one needs the wisdom of vipassanā. For that, one must also obtain śamatha. As it is said in the scriptures: 'The wise know the samādhi as it is.' It is like that. As it is said, 'The mind of a distracted person is always in the jaws of afflictions.' A person with a distracted mind will not have pure discipline, and the mind of bodhi will not be stable. Therefore, for these people, one also needs śamatha that can suppress afflictions. The sign of having obtained śamatha is that even if one trains the body like the tip of a blade of grass and meditates with the crown of the head touching it, one can remain as long as one wants. Because the mind can be used as desired, one can remain on any desired object for as long as one wants. Now it seems that people are saying that they have obtained śamatha without any of these signs. Geshe Tonpa said: If it is false pride, it is okay, otherwise abandon the pratimoksha vows. An old lay practitioner of Drom said to a young monk of Yungwa: 'In this assembly, you alone are young, so try to live to be about eighty years old. In the past, an old lay practitioner of Drom said: 'If someone says they have obtained śamatha, but afflictions arise in their mind, then know that they are possessed by a demon. If someone says they have seen the face of a yidam, but afflictions arise in their mind, then know that they are possessed by a demon.' Please tell that young monk this and repeat these words.' I don't know if he recited these words or not. Khampa Lungpa lived to be over ninety years old and recited these words. If the mind truly abides, even if one has not obtained the actual practice, one can suppress afflictions, and it becomes easier to understand what is to be known. For all desires, attachment will become smaller and smaller. Now, however, people are making afflictions heavier and heavier, and attachment to all desires greater and greater, and yet they claim to be meditating, but they will not reach their destination. Third, the wisdom of vipassanā.

In the explanation of discipline, the connection between higher mind and the discipline of wisdom, showing that both should not be abandoned due to the bondage of separating skillful means and wisdom, the difference between skillful means and wisdom, the order of meditating on these two, and explaining the discipline of wisdom alone, there are five points. The first point is the connection between higher mind and the discipline of wisdom: "The practice of wisdom gone beyond, if separated, will not exhaust the obscurations. Therefore, in order to completely abandon the obscurations of afflictions and knowables, one should always meditate on the yoga of wisdom gone beyond, together with skillful means." Thus it is said. That is to say, as mentioned earlier, even if one practices higher morality and higher mind, because it is separated from the practice of meditating on the perfection of wisdom, one cannot abandon the clinging to reality, therefore the root of its obscurations will not be exhausted. If the two obscurations are not exhausted, one is still a samsaric being. Therefore, in order to completely abandon the afflictive obscurations such as attachment and aversion that arise due to ignorance of the four noble truths, and the cognitive obscurations of conceptual thoughts that rely on clinging to reality, one should rely on calm abiding and meditate on the yoga of wisdom gone beyond, which views the selflessness of persons and the selflessness of phenomena. If there is no calm abiding, just like putting a candle in the wind, wisdom cannot clearly realize the meaning of selflessness. Therefore, when meditating on wisdom, it should not be separated from skillful means, but should always be meditated on in conjunction with the order of the three types of individuals and the skillful means of the five perfections. Thus it is said. Sharawa said, "The first two disciplines only subdue and suppress the afflictions, but if there is no yoga of the perfection of wisdom, then the root of all afflictions, the clinging to self, is not abandoned." "Although the forest fire of meditation repeatedly burns the forest of evils, if the root of clinging to self is not uprooted, it will sprout again like rain moistening it." Thus it is said. Just as fire burns the branches and leaves of a forest, but if the roots are not pulled out, when moistened by rain and so on, the ashes will become fertilizer and grow back again, so if one does not abandon clinging to self, even if one attains samadhi and formless realms, the afflictions are only suppressed, and later when the conditions
