arises from the cause of diligence. Thus, it is established by relying on the method of eight applications that abandon the five faults. What are the five faults? They are laziness, forgetting the instructions, sinking, excitement, non-application, and application. The first of these is both idleness and weak effort. If these two are present, one cannot enter into the meditation of samadhi. Even if one enters, if one forgets the instructions, one will be caught in the swing of doubt and will not become single-pointed on the object of focus. Even if one becomes single-pointed once, if one is separated from mindfulness and awareness and falls into sinking and excitement, one will degenerate from the previous state. If one does not make effort to counteract sinking and excitement when they arise, one will not abandon sinking and excitement. If one does not do so, when one seeks to abide calmly on the object of focus, one will lose the object of focus again and again. In the Differentiation of the Middle and the Extremes, it says, "Laziness and the instructions, forgetting and sinking and excitement, non-application and application, these are considered the five faults." Thus it is said. The eight applications that abandon them are also mentioned in the same text: "The place and abiding in it, the cause and the result itself, not forgetting the object of focus, realizing sinking and excitement, applying oneself to abandon them, and abiding calmly when pacified." And, in the commentary, it says, "The place of effort is desire, abiding is effort, the cause of abiding desire is faith, that is, if one has faith, one will generate desire. The result of abiding effort is extreme pliancy, that is, by exerting effort, one obtains the excellence of samadhi." Thus it is said. The meaning is that initially there is no samadhi, the mind is distracted, and those faults mentioned earlier are present. If there is samadhi, one believes that the previous benefits will arise. One believes that the accomplishment of samadhi depends on the instructions that show the object of focus without error, and based on that believing faith, the desire to obtain it arises. If one has that desire, one exerts effort for the sake of obtaining samadhi. Having exerted effort, one obtains a small stage of pliancy of body and mind. These four become the antidote to laziness. By the mindfulness that does not forget the instructions that show the object of focus of samadhi, one abandons forgetting. By awareness, one knows whether one has fallen into sinking or excitement.
