Even if one meditates on the object of earth, even after thousands of years, one will not achieve the samadhi of tranquility and insight. Therefore, those who wish to practice tranquility and insight should first properly abide in the categories and branches of tranquility and insight as taught in the chapter on the categories of samadhi. Thus it is said, to this, Sharawa said: "Is the chapter on the categories of samadhi the one composed by the scholar Bodhibhadra, in which he spoke of nine categories of tranquility and insight?" Some say it is a sutra. Some say it is the thirteen categories spoken of in the "Ground of the Hearers." After saying this, I (Sharawa) myself was unable to obtain a definite statement from Geshe Putowa, but it was spoken of as an oral transmission. On the roof, I saw the practice manual of Avalokiteshvara, and on top of it was the chapter on the categories of samadhi. I asked him (Putowa), "Is this it?" He said, "It is this, it seems to be." In the explanation of the meaning, it is expressed with the four indispensable statements of pure morality, abiding in solitude, having few desires, and being content. Pure morality becomes a category of tranquility and insight, and it is also done in the manner of five fruits. If morality is pure, there is no regret in the mind, and the body and mind will be filled with joy, and samadhi will arise. If morality is impure, the mind will be filled with the pain of regret, and samadhi will not arise. Now, even if one does many bad things, it seems that one can still make the mind abide, but this is not true Dharma. Because there is no faith, there is no regret. Also, if morality is pure, closing the doors of the senses, the mind will not be defiled by afflictions, and samadhi will arise, just as dyeing cloth without stains, and images appearing in a bright mirror. These two are the fruits of the person. The fruit of maturation is obtaining the basis of a good rebirth. The fruit of cause-likeness is that after obtaining that basis in the future, one will be able to protect morality. The fruit of dominance is that the body and mind become strong, and one is able to endure asceticism. The fruit of separation is that one is separated from the stains of impure morality, and samadhi can be achieved. Even if one has these, if one does not abide in solitude, one cannot obtain samadhi, so one must abide in solitude. The body is separated from busyness, and the mind is separated from conceptual thoughts, and if there are conceptual thoughts, one must not be distracted, so that one can become its category. Now

It is said that compassion arose in people for a single leper who was isolated from the crowd. That is also a benefit of seclusion. Langri Tangpa always said to reduce the need for food and clothing. If one cannot reduce these needs, and one's desires are strong and one is not content, then seclusion and the complete purity of discipline will also be impossible. Therefore, it is necessary to reduce desires and be content. Not desiring good and much, and being content with bad and little, one will accomplish good and much, and will not be distracted by affairs, therefore it will become its cause. Now there is no progress in meditation, and no samadhi arises, this is because one does not abide in the assembly. Geshe Tonpa said: We think that relying only on the oral instructions is enough, although we seek some oral instructions, we cannot generate samadhi, this is because we do not abide in the assembly. Putowa also said: We have not made efforts to create the causes and limbs of samadhi, so we cannot generate samadhi. We think that the oral instructions are enough, and only seek oral instructions, so we will encounter the oral instructions of pure conduct Mudra Mother. Kampa said: Jowo, do not go to see the sights of the army. If you go there, tonight when you meditate, there will be people with helmets making a lot of noise. All bad things are similar to this, so all bad things must be abandoned, as stated before. There is also no closing of the sense doors. Boasting and being self-righteous. Because of small merit, one does not encounter a suitable place. Because desires are too great, one is not content with small things. As it is said: One does not use it to accumulate merit, because desires are too great, one is not content with small things. Therefore, one is disturbed by many affairs and things. We practitioners need a good house suitable for practice. There we need good bedding and healthy food and drink. We need this, we need that, we need not that, so in order to accomplish these, there is no time to practice. If we do a little bit of practice, either we remember those things, or we fall asleep from fatigue, we cannot do anything else. The practitioner Sonam Chen also said, like Ku who associated with relatives because of desire, the monastery is as chaotic as a crossroads. People wearing silk clothes stroll on the flat grass, so it is impossible to be in seclusion.
