Therefore, observing and giving rise to generosity occurs, so it is called "abiding near," meaning the cause. The abiding near of discipline is: not accepting the arising of afflictions and afflictions near to afflictions. Although it is impossible for a beginner to not arise at all, once they arise, do not accept them. Like driving away a snake that has crawled onto your lap, recognize the faults, thereby loathing and practicing the antidote. If you accept them, they will provoke all violations of discipline, so you will not be able to protect it. If you do not accept them, due to the transformation of motivation, the fall will cease, and you will be able to protect it, so it is called "abiding near." As Phuchungwa said, even now when afflictions are pressing on the outside, you must still make some effort from below. Now, we do not even recognize afflictions as enemies, but have taken refuge in Jowo (referring to Atisha). If you recognize the enemy as the enemy, there will be a time when "Dasma" comes. If you repeatedly observe the faults and practice the antidote, the number of times afflictions arise in the continuum will decrease, the strength will weaken, the duration will shorten, and eventually they will not arise at all. The abiding near of patience is: not accepting the arising of anger and resentment, etc. For beginners and beings in the desire realm, it is impossible for these emotions to not arise at all. Once they arise, do not accept them, but abandon them. If you accept them, it will be like this: "All the virtues accumulated in thousands of eons, such as generosity and offerings to the Sugatas, will be destroyed by a single moment of anger." Know that abandoning sentient beings will also abandon the mind of enlightenment, so do not accept it. The abiding near of diligence is: not accepting the arising of inferior laziness and indolent laziness. If you accept these, you will not even be able to obtain a good rebirth, let alone the omniscient Buddhahood. If you cannot obtain Buddhahood, you cannot accomplish the benefit of others, therefore you deceive all the invited sentient beings. Think that you have spoken a great lie and will fall into the lower realms. As it is said, "Bearing the heavy burden of sentient beings on your head, it is not dignified for the supreme sentient beings to walk slowly. Since self and others are tightly bound by various bonds, one should exert a hundredfold effort," treat it like the difference between one sentient being and all sentient beings, and

As stated in the Compendium of Trainings, one should continuously practice the four – giving, guarding, purifying, and increasing – combined with the mind of enlightenment, just like putting on armor. The proximate cause of meditation is to not accept the five obscurations and their experiences. These are: desire, malice, sleep, drowsiness, excitement, regret, and doubt. Sleep and drowsiness make the mind dull, so they are combined into one. Excitement and regret make the mind distracted, so they are combined into one. If one accepts these five obscurations, desire and malice will hinder the guarding of morality. Sleep and drowsiness will obstruct the practice of the training of the mind. Excitement and regret will obstruct the practice of the training of wisdom, thus one cannot attain samadhi. If one experiences the feelings of the five obscurations, it will cause what has been attained to be lost, so do not accept them. Our minds are constantly controlled by the five obscurations, so we must make great effort to cultivate their antidotes. Right now, we have not even experienced a tiny bit of the bliss of meditation. If we had, it would be even more difficult to abandon than the bliss of desire. The five aspects of wisdom are: knowing the benefits of virtuous results, knowing the cause of virtue, knowing the obstacles to virtue, knowing the perversion of virtuous results, and knowing the non-perversion of virtuous results. Now, if one does not even understand the illusion-like nature, then all else is said to be useless. If the path of seeing has not arisen, what use is worldly dharma? One must have some understanding of the Dharma. Without these, one cannot generate illusion-like wisdom. With these five, all purposes are accomplished. The first of these, knowing the benefits of virtuous results, is: knowing the benefits of obtaining virtuous results, the manifest increase, which can serve as the basis for the three liberations; the benefits of the liberation of hearers and solitary realizers, which is the permanent abandonment of suffering and its causes; the benefits of obtaining omniscience, which is the perfection of abandonment and wisdom, and activity that becomes the nourishment for all sentient beings, and so on. The second, knowing the cause of virtue, is: the cause of virtue manifesting in body and speech is the three, non-attachment and so on. The cause of the three, non-attachment and so on, is relying on holy individuals, listening to the sacred Dharma, and proper attention.
