Next, the seventh is patience and detachment. Patience is that both enduring suffering and harm are necessary. If one cannot endure suffering, no Dharma will succeed, just as Geshe Tonpa said using wine as a metaphor. If one does not endure harm and retaliates, one will not become a disciplined person who fundamentally cuts off harming others, therefore one should cultivate patience in various ways. Even a single moment of sin can cause one to fall into the Avici hell for eons, so merely contemplating the results of karma also helps to cultivate patience. Thinking like this: I would rather be burned or killed, or have my head cut off, than to submit to the enemy of afflictions in any way. Like this, one needs a spirit that does not tire of the door of Dharma and can endure. Detachment is: One who desires merit and dwells in the forest should not examine the faults of others, and should not think that one is particularly excellent and the best. As it is said, not causing harm to others who make mistakes and behave improperly is to possess the six qualities of detachment. Because if one harms others, it will lead to danger in the method, thereby exhausting all good roots. Do not be proud of being disciplined, do not despise others for breaking their vows. If one despises others merely because of being disciplined, because of despising, that person is called a breaker of vows. Like this, one will fall into the ranks of vow breakers. Therefore, rely on the great compassion that is in accordance with the Dharma, and vow to abandon all faults of all actions that regard sentient beings as relatives. If one still feels that even one fault of sentient beings cannot be abandoned, one should feel ashamed and respectful. The eighth is vigilance endowed with five branches: Remembering the transgressions committed in the past and immediately confessing them is vigilance based on the former extreme; if transgressions occur in the future, confessing them according to the Dharma and putting on armor is vigilance based on the latter extreme; immediately confessing the transgressions that occur now, like a strongman quickly wrestling, or even if one cannot get up immediately, not staying with the transgression for a night, just as the great ocean does not associate with corpses, is vigilance based on the middle extreme; wherever one dwells,

With whom to associate, what enjoyments to use, what actions to do, and how to proceed, if these do not violate the bodhisattva's precepts and do not interrupt the attainment of great enlightenment for the benefit of others, then examine them well before engaging. If those things are obstructive, then do not engage in them. This is the mindfulness that comes first in all actions. When engaging in conduct, repeatedly examine the state of body and mind. In short, that alone is the characteristic of guarding mindfulness. As it is said, therefore, one should constantly engage in all actions of body, speech, and mind with mindfulness and awareness, thereby taking and abandoning, and not generating faults. This is having mindfulness that accompanies. Among these, the first three are about rectifying downfalls, and the latter two are about not generating faults. Ninth, perfection of ritual: For immediate tasks and the tasks of robes and bowls, one should act in a way that is not criticized by worldly scholars and does not contradict the sacred Vinaya. The same applies to all four postures, as stated in the extremely secret instructions, such as the five branches and four categories. The same applies to virtuous activities, meditation, and reading. Putowa said: We do not have a basis for understanding or discussing all of this as Dharma. When walking, like a lost ox at sunset, we look in all four directions, our steps faltering and swaying. When we gather together, we speak in a way that cannot be confronted, as if we had won a battle. Tenth, perfection of livelihood: In the Teacher's Precious Garland, it says: 'Feigning discipline for gain and respect, speaking softly first for gain and respect, praising others' possessions to obtain them, measuring by gain for gain, openly slandering others, desiring gains by gains, praising what was previously obtained.' Like the five wrong livelihoods mentioned, and making a living by the four types of agriculture, even abandoning making a living by crafts, because making a living by teaching the Dharma is also counted as making a living by crafts, so all of those are included.
