Regarding the discipline of vows, first, immediately after taking the vows, one must understand the root downfalls, otherwise how can one proceed? In the Bodhisattvacaryāvatāra, the reason for first reading the Ākāśagarbha Sūtra is also for this purpose. As Geshe Tonpa and Putowa said, first understand the root downfalls and avoid them. Sharawa himself said: Whichever ritual one takes the Bodhisattva vows in, the root downfalls in it, like the places of defeat, are the rules of the noble ones: Due to attachment to gain and respect, praising oneself and disparaging others; being miserly and not giving Dharma or wealth to those who are suffering and without protectors; not listening to others' confessions, angrily attacking others; abandoning the Mahāyāna, and teaching what appears to be similar to the true Dharma. These are, because the motivation and afflictions are the same, divided into four types, and due to the differences in actions, divided into eight types. As the Paṇḍita Bodhisattva said that he had abandoned the vows simply because he did not accept the request for forbearance, it is known from this. Putowa said: In Nyangtö, when Ku Chenpo and Geshe Tonpa debated, he gave instructions including that story and stopped them. The four of Kyenchang Sosortharpa, are the four and eight said from the chapter on discipline. Also, in a commentary on the chapter on discipline, it says: Merely praising oneself and disparaging others due to attachment to gain and respect will also lose the vows, if one enjoys the wealth of the Sangha, how can one not lose them? And so on, applying them one by one. Atiśa said: If the aspiration Bodhicitta is lost and then retaken, it can be taken six times, the first and seventh time, after that it cannot be taken again. If it is not lost, no matter what one accomplishes, it is the practice of Bodhicitta. If the engaging Bodhicitta is lost and then retaken, it can be taken twice, the first and third time, after that it cannot be taken again, these are recorded in the scriptures themselves. One cannot retake it if it is certain that it is lost or uncertain that it has arisen. There was no one more truthful than Atiśa, but he did not allow this either, saying that these are the restrictions of the teachings. The meditator Wangchuk Ö of Radreng asked Geshe Gonpawa to teach him the generation of Bodhicitta, after that he lost the aspiration Bodhicitta. When Putowa was residing in Nakona, he requested the key instructions.

Therefore, at that time, Putowa and Shangga did not agree. (They said) Are you yourself the image of the Tathagata? Or which temple's lineage of Shangga do you incline to in your heart, then go there. He said that I, Se'utongba, incline to my own lineage's Shangga, and it seems that I am coming, so receive the initiation there. If relatives arrive within the allotted time, the precepts will not be given. Asking Geshe Dunba within the allotted time will take a long time. If you can do the vows, there will be no fundamental downfall, it will take a long time. It seems that he thinks it is longer than making vows, and he did not say to cut it off with a lotus. Pucungba asked Yerpa, and he said that I have already asked Jowo, together (do this thing). That passage of Geshe was recorded in the Lamrim, explaining the previous content in detail, which is contrary to the precepts. Because of greed for fame and fortune, through actions such as praising oneself and slandering others, there are eight types from the perspective of behavior, and four types from the perspective of thought. Among them, there are two types caused by desire: the idea of hoping to obtain wealth, and the two behaviors of praising oneself and slandering others will lead to (the precepts) being broken. This requires three conditions: doing it continuously without interruption, liking and enjoying doing it, and thinking that this is an advantage. If there is not even a little shame and fear, then it is driven by great confusion. Therefore, if the allotted time is exceeded, (the precepts) will be broken, so one should take the precepts again. Apart from that, a medium downfall should be confessed to three people, and the rest should be confessed in front of one person. It is not affliction, but following one's own mind. The things to do are: if one is persuaded by others and feels ashamed, it is medium; if one feels ashamed by oneself, it is small; if there is nothing, it is big, the scholar Jangchub Sangpo said. Like the compassionate king of doctors, there is no fault in praising oneself, but now there is no attendant. Like the Buddha saying bad things about Devadatta, it is also difficult to have such an attendant. Therefore, Light Increase requested: How should I measure myself without slandering the wisdom of others? One should measure oneself like a mountain or not a mountain. There is no slander, and no excessive arrogance. He said so, so he said that it is important to know one's own characteristics, and to always measure whether one has faith in the Dharma, and whether one is respectful to cause and effect and the precepts. If one knows one's own limits,
