I also cannot go along with my own nature. Furthermore, benefiting one side while harming the other is the lowest of the five types of beings, the animals. Even among animals, there are untamed hawks and wolves, so this cannot be done. The Bodhisattva vow is to dedicate even one's body and life, and through direct and indirect means, the actions of body, speech, and mind are all dedicated to benefiting all sentient beings, and it is also necessary to abandon harming all sentient beings, which also becomes the basis of the Bodhisattva vow. Therefore, now in the Kadampa tradition, when taking the Bodhisattva vow, it must be taken by someone who has determined either of the two aspects of the Pratimoksha vow, so that it becomes an actual practice. It is said that those who deceive in secret are not a basis that everyone can determine. The Venerable Spilbupa said: Half of the Bodhisattva vow is to abandon harm with its basis. The other half is to turn from abandoning harm to engaging in benefiting. To increase this benefit, just as when Indra was born, he abandoned (harm) in order to protect the Garuda's offspring, and just as when Gomase was born, he did not want to kill small animals. Second, explaining the difference that is superior to this is: Among the seven types of Pratimoksha vows, as the Tathagata said, the splendor of pure conduct is the most excellent, and it is considered to be the Bhikshu vow. Although the direct meaning of the scripture seems to indicate that only Bhikshus are the most excellent, Geshe Tonpa said that the meaning of the scripture is as the Venerable One said: 'Non-harming with a basis is superior.' Therefore, non-harming with a basis, what is superior to the actions of householders is the renunciate, so the five types of renunciates are represented by Bhikshus. As they said, Putowa and Sharawa the Great also said: In general, the basis of the Bodhisattva vow must be any one of the seven types of Pratimoksha vows that are maintained for life. Among those taught by the Tathagata, the one with the splendor of perfect pure conduct is the most excellent basis of the Bodhisattva vow. What is that? It is the non-harming basis that is superior to the actions of householders, which is the Bhikshu.

Actually speaking, it refers to bhikṣuṇīs and students between śrāmaṇera (monks) parents, that is, those who possess any of the five vows of ordination. As stated in the commentary on the root text. That is, by abiding in the four dharmic abodes and the four dharmic principles as they arise from the Dharma, thereby abandoning the four dharmas that lead to defeat, and also, during the recitation of the Prātimokṣa Sūtra every half month, by understanding and guarding, one abides in the four (dharmic abodes). In order to avoid displeasing sentient beings, and without any worries about food or anything else, one can therefore study the precepts of a Bodhisattva without hindrance. Nowadays, like the Nepalese bhikṣu Hādu, worries are like doing the dual tasks of a householder and a monk. Completely accepting (offerings) means that in some people's homes, they even keep weapons. The most extreme is that, even if it's not bows and arrows, in every householder's home, they keep one or two necessities for the ordained. Anger refers to relying on humans and gods, thereby increasing to about eighteen things that cause mental suffering, and that is not called a person, so said Sharawa. Having thus established the basis, secondly, regarding the ritual of how to take it. There are two ways: taking it from a lama when the object is actually present, and taking it with faith from the Buddhas of the ten directions when it is not present. The first way is divided into two: according to which treatise should the ritual be performed, and explaining the characteristics of the lama as the object. The first is: From the ritual spoken in the chapter on ethics of the Bodhisattva-bhūmi, take the vows from a virtuous lama who possesses the true characteristics. As it is said, in general, the ritual for taking the Bodhisattva vows is divided into two: with an object and without an object. The one with an object is when the teacher, the noble Asaṅga, says that it should be done according to the ritual spoken in the chapter on ethics of the treatise called Bodhisattva-bhūmi, from the object of acceptance that will be explained, take the vows of the Bodhisattva's ethics from a virtuous lama who possesses the true four characteristics. That is to say, the ritual composed by Jowo himself is the same as the old Nyingma tradition of the Twenty Verses of Explanations, so said Sharawa. The second is to explain the characteristics of the lama as the object: being skilled in the ritual of vows, and
