"It is possible only for those who have the fortune, not for others." It is said. That is, the person who is the basis for taking the entrance (Bodhisattva vow) must be one who possesses any of the seven types of individual liberation vows and has obtained the aspiration and has not lost the vow. In general, regarding individual liberation vows, in the Vinayavibhāṣā Samudra and the Abhidharmakośa, etc., are listed the male and female lay devotees, the male and female novices, the male and female monks, the probationary nun as seven, and the eight precepts as eight. Here, from the probationary nun upwards, the vows of the seven types of individual liberation are taken as the basis for the Bodhisattva vows, so the vow of the eight precepts, which is limited to one day and one night, is excluded. Other than the Bodhisattva vow, those who possess any of the seven vows of individual liberation for as long as life lasts have the fortune to take and obtain the Bodhisattva vow. If one does not possess any of the seven types of individual liberation vows, then one does not have such a fortune. Regarding this, Sharawa said, "The basis for entering is the definitive individual liberation vow." That is, it was not said that one must rely on individual liberation vows at the time of aspiration, because it is considered that some Bodhisattvas may protect the Buddha's teachings by adopting a method of not abandoning weapons and not refraining from harming others. However, after committing to entering (the Bodhisattva path), this is not permissible, because the determination of all of these is in Nirvana. The meaning stated in the Sutra of Advice to the King is also the same. Regarding this, if one thinks, "Is this the basis for arising or the basis for abiding?" and "An unstable one should not be the basis for a stable one," and "The purposes are also inconsistent, so it is not a basis," then there is only speculation. If one does not know how to practice after examining it in this way, then there is no need. Similarly, if one examines it in this way, then all secret mantras cannot be practiced. Pandit Abhayakara says that the individual liberation vow is not necessary as a basis, like Vagishvarakirti, this is protecting a bad doctrine. For a beginner, mistakes may occur. If one does not take remedial measures after they occur, but protects a bad doctrine, then it is very unreasonable. Some people think that at the time of taking the Bodhisattva vow, the individual liberation vow is transformed, so at that time it will last until the essence of enlightenment.

As it is, the Pratimoksha vows also abide. Like the Bodhisattva vows, if one commits a root downfall and loses them, one can still retake them. Likewise, it is said that if the Pratimoksha vows, once established, are lost due to a root downfall, they can still be retaken. Furthermore, there are instances where ordained individuals, having failed, take the Bodhisattva vows and then resume practicing the Pratimoksha vows. However, these are not all correct. Geshe Tonpa said: The time for the Pratimoksha to abide and the method of relinquishing and receiving it are as explained in the Pratimoksha itself. If one commits a root downfall of the Pratimoksha, the ordained cannot retake it, like a palm tree with its head cut off. Like a Bhikshu, so too for a Bhikshuni, there is no opportunity to take vows again afterward. Thus it is said. If an ordained individual commits a root downfall and wishes to rely on the Pratimoksha and retake the Upasaka vows, this comes from the instructions. The Pratimoksha is necessary as a basis, as it is said here, it is necessary as the basis for both arising and abiding. If so, what is the measure of relinquishing at the time of death? What is the measure of abiding as a basis? Thus one might think. The things that arise from the power of the precepts, such as not shaving hair and beard, and the fault of wearing white clothes, etc., are what are relinquished at the time of death. Bodhisattvas, seeing the benefit of sentient beings, also take birth in other realms. The ordained state is the basis for men and women in the three continents, so the ordained state does not abide forever. The measure of abiding as a basis is that by the power of compassion, turning away from harming others at the root, wherever one is born, it abides increasingly. For example, Master Vasubandhu immersed himself in a vessel of sesame oil for seven days and made a vow not to interrupt his teaching. Master Asanga approved of this, which is the discipline of gathering virtuous dharmas. After seven days, relinquishing this does not mean relinquishing the gathering of virtuous dharmas. Because the gathering of virtuous dharmas abides, this vow also does not abide forever. Bhikshus and Bhikshunis are all in the state of Pratimoksha. The nature is as previously explained, so relinquishing this state...
