All of these become the benefits of aspiration. These are twofold: self-benefit and the benefit of others. Abandoning unfavorable aspects and accomplishing qualities are the two, which are summarized into the four doors of benefit. The first of these, the benefit of self-interest, is: Because it generates all of one's own Buddha-dharmas, it is like a seed. As Sharawa said: If a single seed does not enter the ground, no matter what one does, such as plowing, digging, sowing, and irrigating, not even a green sprout will arise, let alone fruit. Similarly, if the mind of enlightenment, like a seed, does not arise, no matter what one does, such as the practices of the perfections, meditating on emptiness, or meditating on the deity's body in a vast manner, or meditating on the channels, wheels, and bindus, not even a sprout of the path of seeing will arise, let alone obtaining the wisdom of omniscience. The results of generosity and so forth, which are not grasped by the mind of enlightenment, are only enjoyment, a basis for good rebirth, a perfect form and retinue, the accomplishment of actions, and being born as a god in the higher realms. Even if one meditates on emptiness, one will not see it. Even if one sees it in general, it inclines towards the Hearers. Now, it is thought that emptiness alone is sufficient. It seems that great yogis directly see emptiness, and it seems that there is no obstruction to any walls. Geshe Tonpa said that Jowo (referring to Atisha) was inclined towards the Hearers and made him cultivate loving-kindness and compassion from the root. Putowa said that if there is no mind of enlightenment, even mantra inclines towards the path of the Hearers. One person was unhappy and asked a monastic, "Of course, it inclines towards the Hearers, and even goes to the path of hell." The deity's body, Mahamudra, and so forth, are symbols of mantra yoga, Mother Tantra, Yamantaka, and the four of Guhyasamaja. If there is no wheel protected by the mind of enlightenment, no matter which of these one practices, most will be mixed up and confused, and one will not obtain siddhis. Even if one obtains them, they will only be common, small siddhis, and one will not obtain the siddhi of Mahamudra at all. Second, the benefit of others is: Because it increases the white crops of beings, it is like a field.

It is called "Thus." Sharawa said, "The fruit must follow the seed, so the seed is the unique cause, just as the field is the common condition. Like the seed, the unique cause is the generation of the mind of each of the three vehicles, etc., and the common condition is the mind of enlightenment. Because the mind of enlightenment has special qualities, it is said in the sutras: 'If the Bodhisattva is in the world, then the human world is in the world.' And so on, 'The Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Enlightened Buddha is also in the world.' Therefore, harming a Bodhisattva is the same as harming all sentient beings." Third, the benefit of abandoning opposing factors is: just as it is impossible for a nation with erect hair to throw a short spear and not be hit or not die after being hit. It is impossible for all those who have generated the mind of enlightenment not to become an antidote to afflictions, or not to overcome afflictions. Because it can overcome the enemy of afflictions, it is said to be like a short spear. That is, all afflictions arise from the nature of the three roots of non-virtue, while the mind of enlightenment arises from the nature of the three roots of virtue, so it is the key to opposition. Just as darkness that has existed for millions of years can be dispelled by a single lamp, if it has not become an antidote to afflictions, it cannot be said that the mind of enlightenment has arisen. Just as a picture of fire drawn on a wall cannot burn anything, it is not real fire. The great Sharawa said so. Similarly, because it can make the head of afflictions fall, it is like a sword; because it can cut down the tree of afflictions, it is like an axe. Regarding all of these, Geshe himself also said: 'Abandoning the root of afflictions—the view of the aggregates, is ostensibly accomplished by wisdom, but through the blessing of the mind of enlightenment, it can become a benefit, because without the mind of enlightenment, immaculate wisdom will not arise.' Also, from the discriminations of this life to seeking one's own liberation, and the opposing factors of the Paramitas, from stinginess to attachment to things, everything is in four ways.
