Moreover, (when ordaining) one should inquire about three things: his origin, poverty, and character. Nowadays, if someone is poor, his origin is not even considered, and all those with obstacles are allowed to ordain. Among these three, only a bad origin and foundation are important. Geshe Tonpa also said that character should be taken as the basis of everything. For those with obstacles who have no foundation, after ordination, they are placed at the end of the Sangha. If they are too poor, they will return (to lay life). If they have good character, they will also return (to lay life). Our own situation is like this now, so those who have ordained, if they have not committed fundamental transgressions in the meantime, if they can meet someone who can tame their minds like an old lay practitioner, then according to Jowo (Atisha): there is no need to retake the vows, just restore them to their original state. If, at the time of taking the Pratimoksha vows, pure intention does not arise, then it is not enough to just tame the mind later, the vows themselves need to be retaken from the beginning. Because it is more important than the Pratimoksha vows not needing to be retaken, retaking them and acting carelessly are not allowed. As Jowo said, it is said in the biography of the Noble Ananda: Initially, the Blessed One did not turn back, because he was the last existence, so he completed his ordination with "Come, Bhikkhu". After taking the vows, the people of the Lotus family obtained the power of the Chakravartin within seven days, and they had no thought other than to rule the country. The Blessed One brought him back and forth in various ways. He showed him the Thirty-Three Heavens, causing him to lose his attachment to his consorts and the throne. At that time, he developed a longing for the future life, and became extremely respectful of the precepts, but he was still listed among the violators of the precepts. He showed him hell, and he lost his attachment to it as well. Then, he gradually showed him the sufferings of humans, and he became disgusted with all of Samsara, and he became a precept of definite renunciation, and he attained Arhatship without retaking the previous precepts. Now we are far away, and saying that we are relying on virtuous friends to study, everyone's thoughts are no more than Ananda who has not seen the Thirty-Three Heavens, and cannot improve their minds. It is as if a virtuous friend teaches a brother, and after going to a place, they want to seek wealth and get close to powerful people. After returning, they become friends and enemies of lay people.
