Because of clinging to existence and abandoning liberation, one will fall into the Avīci hell. All beings in the peak of existence (Srid rtse) fall into the Avīci hell because they cultivate with the notion of arising. Thus it is said. In this way, there is no happiness wherever they are born. Even if there is a slight appearance of happiness, the Ornament of the Sūtras says: 'Attachment to existence is inverted pleasure, thus suffering turns into pleasure,' and change, that is, impermanence, is a deceptive dharma. Sharawa said: 'In the past, I was born as a god in the peak of existence and lived for eighty-four thousand great kalpas, but I was deceived countless times. Then I fell into the lower realms again. Even if I am born there again now, I will still be deceived.' The Abhidharma only mentions eighty thousand. The Sūtra of Extensive Wisdom says that one thousand are added to each of the four formless realms, and mentions eighty-four thousand and forty-three thousand, etc. In the three formless realms and above the second dhyāna, there are no lords or servants, and all are equally good. In those places, too, one has been born and deceived countless times, and the end is not visible, and one will still be deceived. From the first dhyāna to all six desire realms, there are lords and servants. Even the chief gods of those realms have been born and deceived countless times. Now, meditate by applying each deception one by one. The wheel-turning king, the king of a region, ministers, merchants, wealthy people, and chief patrons are also deceived, and the deception is similar to the previous ones. Countless times, great Brahmin priests, or those who have obtained great power by relying on the secret mantras of outsiders, or those who have attained the eight great siddhis, or those who have attained the five mundane superknowledges, have been deceived. Even if they attain them now, they will still be deceived. It is most difficult to be born as a human being, and even if one is born as a human being again, if one collects the bones of the dead, they will be higher than the king of mountains. If one collects the blood, it will be more than the four great oceans. The breast milk that has been drunk and the tears shed by friends and relatives after death have also exceeded these, and one has been constantly deceived. In this way, the happy realms are merely places to seek meaning. The three lower realms are like permanent dwellings. In the lower realms themselves, hell is like a permanent dwelling. If one does not cultivate liberation, one must know that one still needs to do so. Is there no difference between the peak of existence and the Avīci hell? That is also withou

It is said that one should meditate as if one were in the uninhabitable Copper-Colored Rakshasa Island. By meditating in this way, definite understanding arises, and one realizes that samsara is like a detestable prison, etc., and as previously explained, is not a place to dwell. Therefore, one must begin to abandon its cause—the origin of suffering (samudaya). There are two types of origin of suffering: the origin of suffering of karma and the origin of suffering of afflictions. On top of the ignorance that is inherently ignorant of suchness, there is ignorance that is ignorant of the results of karma, as well as craving that desires happiness and does not desire suffering, and non-virtuous karma. These three produce the suffering of the three lower realms. Ignorance that is ignorant of suchness, craving, and virtuous karma, these three accomplish the bodies of gods and humans in the desire realm. Ignorance that is ignorant of suchness, unwavering karma (samadhi without wisdom), and afflictions that are attached to joy and happiness, these three accomplish the gods of the form and formless realms. All of these are said to be the origin of suffering, the cause of suffering. In this way, it seems that virtuous karma and unwavering karma from the origin of suffering of karma are also the cause of producing samsara, so should they be abandoned? Sding-dma'-ba said: In the causal stage, do not abandon virtuous karma; in the resultant stage, do not abandon the leisure and endowment of the bodies of gods and humans. So, what should be abandoned? One should abandon the ignorance that is ignorant of suchness and the craving for happiness and suffering. If virtuous karma is practiced with the wisdom that knows the four truths as a companion, then it becomes the discipline of the Lesser Vehicle. Similarly, in the causal stage, do not abandon unwavering karma; in the resultant stage, do not abandon the samadhi of the higher realms. What should be abandoned? One should abandon the ignorance that is ignorant of suchness and the afflictions that are attached to joy and happiness. If unwavering karma is practiced with the wisdom that knows the four truths as a companion, then it becomes the higher mind training of the Lesser Vehicle. If virtuous karma and the samadhi of abiding in the mind are accompanied by emptiness and compassion, then they become the discipline and mind training of the Great Vehicle in sequence. Sha-ra-ba also said: Abandoning the ten non-virtues, merely by having the ten virtues as a companion, one cannot attain the state of gods and humans. One must have the four truths, dependent origination, skillful means, and wisdom.
