Oh, all the bad-tasting and unpleasant medicines must be taken. All the cutting, burning, and rough treatments must be endured. One cannot live freely and unrestrainedly. There are many sufferings such as nursing the sick and undergoing cesarean sections. In general, if one is dominated by the four sufferings such as encountering unpleasant people and things, there are also the sufferings of changing seasons, the sufferings of hunger and thirst, and fainting. In short, all the unpleasant objects of the six senses are encounters with unpleasant people and things. Separation from parents, friends, Khenpos, teachers, and possessions is separation from what is loved, but separation from them is also encountering what is unpleasant. Encountering those unpleasant things mentioned above is also separation from what is loved. Therefore, depending on these, there are many kinds of suffering. The suffering of seeking what is non-existent and not finding it. Some people, even though born as humans, do not accumulate merit. Some are born at the doorstep and die at the doorstep or in a corner. Some become poor, like crows on a snowy mountain, with no difference between hunger, thirst, and a hungry ghost. From the moment of birth, poverty is hopeless and fruitless. One has nothing to say to one's own family, and cannot enjoy happiness even on festive occasions. Alas, even words of generosity are rare. It is said as such. Some have wealth in the first half of their lives, but in the second half, their wealth declines, and they have to wander around with their wives and children. If one is wealthy, there is also the suffering of not being able to protect one's existing wealth, just as it is said, "The increase of wealth is the surging of the ocean of suffering." In the Letter to a Friend, it is also said, "How painful it is to have much wealth! Those with few desires are not like that. However many heads the Naga kings have, that many sufferings arise from them." It is said as such. Therefore, Sharawa said, "If power is small, then it is small, everyone will trample you underfoot. If power is great, then it is great, but if you do not know how to wield power, you will fall into a cesspool. The fire of hatred will burn you alive. In short, the five aggregates that are taken up are called suffering." Having experienced all the sufferings such as birth in this way, finally, the eighth is the suffering of death.

Ah, born alone amidst perfect abundance, clinging to those things, death is inevitable, and the moment of sudden death, not knowing where one will go, will surely come. Stingwa said, "Few die happily; there will be suffering like falling into an abyss with nothing to grasp." Thus, even born as a human, there is no happiness in one's own nature. Therefore, even if born as a god, there are immeasurable sufferings such as death and rebirth. All the gods of the desire realm have the suffering of omens of death: the color of the body becomes unsightly, dislike of the seat, withering garlands, clothes stained, and the body experiencing unprecedented sweat. These are called the five omens of death and transference from the higher realms, occurring to the gods residing in the heavenly realms, just like the omens that foretell the death of humans on earth. As it says in the Letter to a Friend, the gods must each experience seven days. To this, Sharawa said, "The higher one goes, the greater the suffering when the omens of death appear. At that time, the abode of the gods becomes empty, and most know that they will fall into the lower realms, and the mental suffering is like the heart breaking." Seeing one's own goddess and retinue being taken away by other gods, the suffering of jealousy is also immeasurable. It is said that the suffering felt from a feverish illness at the time of death is sixteen times greater than the suffering of hell beings, and that is also mental suffering. All the gods of the desire realm, the Four Great Kings and the Thirty-three, have immeasurable suffering from fighting among themselves and fighting with the Asuras. The suffering of the weak being suppressed by the powerful strength and majesty of the gods is also immeasurable. There are also many beings called poor gods, who, although counted among the gods, are actually no different from pretas. Even if born in the higher realms, most eventually fall into the lower realms. Even if they do not fall into the lower realms, they fall into the lower desire realm. If the consciousness of arising is manifested, and through meditation and formless concentration, one is born in the two higher realms, then all those born there must take birth again at the time of death.
