Transforming former enemies and friends into later enemies and friends. The enjoyments of ordinary householders also become later enjoyments. The monks of Rama Monastery, because they were reading, said, "Rama is everywhere," and then Kavali joined his palms in greeting. We are all sitting like that. Outwardly, there is no difference between Gawa and Kunga, but inwardly, their thoughts are vastly different. Although we appear steadfast outwardly, inwardly we are thinking of returning home, wanting to care for relatives, villages, and deities. They say that merely having such thoughts, the precepts that are taken and guarded will not become the path to liberation; taking and guarding precepts must be accompanied by a mind of renunciation like that mentioned earlier. Therefore, in the process of learning higher discipline, cutting off is also necessary, so contemplate the faults of all inner and outer desires, thereby abandoning desire. The faults of desire, from the beginning of practice, are said to be: "Here, killing, binding, and cutting; in the future, creating hells, etc." Because this one encompasses all, contemplate the faults of desire in that way. Like the story of the merchants of Rakshasa Island, if you do not look back at desire, even just the precepts of a layperson can liberate you from the ocean of samsara. If you look back, just as the greater the commitment, the greater the fall, so from the time of ordination, do not look back at desire, as Sharawa said. Relying on higher discipline, the object of meditation is that all of samsara is suffering, as previously shown, and that the cause of achieving suffering is the two, karma and afflictions, which exist on their respective bases. And its root is craving. Because craving arises from desire, all desires are small in taste and great in fault, and if the two, karma and afflictions, are eliminated, suffering will cease, and the antidote to eliminating karma and afflictions is the noble path. Thus, in meditation, for the Four Noble Truths, there is merely the cause and effect of defilement and purification; other than that, there is no agent, no enjoyer of results, no meditator, and no attainer of results; one must discern the selflessness of these.

Through wisdom, one abandons the afflictions rooted in the view of self, thereby not accumulating karma caused by them. If karma is not accumulated, one will not take birth in samsara, which is called realizing cessation or nirvana. As Sharawa said: Knowing samsara as suffering is the truth of suffering. It is merely suffering, without a self that suffers. It arises from the cause, which is the truth of origination of karma and afflictions. It is merely origination, without a self that is a creator. The cessation of these two is the truth of cessation. It is merely cessation, without a self that ceases. It arises from the path, which is the three trainings, therefore it is the truth of the path. It is merely the path, without a self that practices the path. The aspects of the four truths: impermanence, suffering, emptiness, selflessness. The aspects of cause, origination, arising, condition. Cessation, peace, excellence, definite emergence. Path, reason, accomplishment, definite deliverance. When the four truths are thoroughly understood in sixteen aspects as the selflessness of the person, one can attain the fruits from stream-enterer to arhat with remainder and without remainder. On top of that, by meditating on dependent origination, one can attain the liberation of a solitary buddha. To this, the Sravaka Vaibhashikas, who hold extreme views, believe that nirvana is the ten qualities of the no-more-learning or the nature of the five uncontaminated aggregates. The Sutrantikas believe that it is like ice melting on a lake or clouds dissipating in the sky, merely the separation of coarse matter. One cannot abandon moments and subtle particles. This is called an intermediate person. Thus, regarding the characteristics of an intermediate person, learning in the manner of the four truths, to this, Sengge Nangwa said: Regarding the four truths, there are two orders: the order of explanation and the order of practice. According to the explanation, suffering should be known, origination should be abandoned, cessation should be realized, and the path should be relied upon. According to the practice, it is like a sick person troubled by illness relying on a skilled doctor. The doctor first diagnoses the illness, then prepares medicine that is beneficial for that illness. When the illness is cured, comfort is naturally attained. Similarly, a person who understands all of samsara as suffering relies on a lama.
