The Blister Hell, the Blue Lotus Crack Hell, the Lotus Crack Hell, the Great Lotus Crack Hell, all of these have forms of suffering that match their names. In those places of the cold hells, there is no shelter of clothes, houses, or walls. They are separated from the light of fire and the sun. Due to the cold, they dwell by the water's edge, in valleys, or on open plains, where snow and hail strike their bodies. Because it is so cold, the bodies of the sentient beings born there develop blisters, and the suffering ranges from what is called "Achu" to being frozen into ice. Furthermore, the body turns blue like a blue lotus and cracks into five petals, or turns red like a lotus and cracks into ten petals, or cracks greatly into sixteen petals like a great lotus. The scriptures say that such suffering exists. The lifespan of those cold hells is also: When a hundred years pass inside an unhusked sesame seed, And one seed is taken out at a time, it will be exhausted. That is the lifespan of the Blister Hell. The lifespan of the other hells is twenty times greater. It is said, so the lifespan is indeed very long. We ourselves have not obtained the certainty that we will not be born in all those hellish places. Without obtaining certainty, if misfortune befalls us, there is no difficulty in going (to hell). Therefore, it is very important to repeatedly contemplate those forms of suffering and generate a mind of fear and dread. Moreover, we people of Jambudvipa are difficult to convince, so merely hearing, seeing, and thinking is not enough. We need to think from the depths of our hearts to generate conviction, as Sharawa said. The standard for generating conviction through practice should also be, as Sharawa himself said, at least like the two nephews of the Venerable Ananda. That is to say, when Prince Holy Born rebuked the Shakyas, only a merchant named Radha remained in Shravasti. Then, he saw two orphans and asked them if they knew anyone. They said they had an uncle named Ananda. So the merchant took them to Jeta Grove and entrusted them to Ananda. He had them study there, but because they were mischievous and could not be disciplined, he entrusted them to the son of Maudgalyayana. At first, because they recognized a good monk, they started being mischievous again and could not be disciplined. So (Maudgalyayana) said, "Do you want to see the playground below?" Saying this, he showed them hell, and they became so frightened that they thought about it even when eating.

They walk as if their eyes are blindfolded. As soon as they finish eating and remember it, they vomit even the contents of their intestines, becoming extremely emaciated. Even if they can barely move, they say they will study here. Similarly, (the master) said that one must practice until faith arises. Then, contemplate the suffering of the pretas (hungry ghosts). Starting with mindfulness, there are thirty-six different types of pretas, but if all are summarized, they can be categorized into two types: those who dwell on the ground and those who wander in the sky, as explained by the noble Asanga. The pretas who dwell on the ground are located five hundred yojanas below this Jambudvipa (earth). Some pretas who dwell there, having been born there, do not even hear the names of food and drink for many years, so they cannot find anything to eat at any time. Even if they occasionally find a little bit out of a hundred, they see it guarded by beings born from their own karma, holding weapons, so they cannot eat or drink it. Their flesh and blood dry up, and their bodies become like sapless tree trunks, and so on, they have such suffering, which is an external obscuration. Internal obscuration means that even if no one else obstructs them, they cannot find food and drink in the first place. Even if they find a little bit, it cannot fit into their mouths, which are as small as the eye of a needle. Even if it fits, their throats are as thin as needles, so it cannot pass through, and their stomachs cannot become as large as a mountain. Whenever it enters their stomachs, it does not satisfy them, but instead, they experience the suffering of their internal organs being burned, and so on. The obscuration of food and drink means that they cannot find food and drink in the first place. Even if they find a little bit, it turns into pus, blood, and sparks, and so on, and they have the suffering of not being able to eat it. Among these, some outcasts cannot even find unclean things like pus, feces, and blood. They fight each other face to face, pulling out ripe pus from their throats to eat. That is what is said. Speaking of the suffering of distorted perception, for these beings, in the summer, the moon is hot, and in the winter, the sun is cold. These beings cause trees to bear no fruit, and merely by looking at them, rivers dry up. It is said that they also have such suffering. The pretas who wander in the sky refer to ghosts and malevolent spirits, and so on, all of these types that currently cause harm to people.
