If there is no refuge there, what shall I do then? Like the thought expressed in the Bodhicharyavatara. Therefore, the Victorious One is the protector of beings, diligent in the work of saving beings, the mighty one who dispels all fears, from this day forth I take refuge in you. As it is said in the Bodhicharyavatara itself, or as Sharawa said: Meditating on the qualities of the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, this is the most important teaching. The teacher says in the Ratnavali: Freed from all faults, adorned with all virtues, the only friend of all sentient beings, I prostrate to the all-knowing one. Or in the Praise of the Supreme God, it says: You have no faults, possess immeasurable virtues, have all-knowingness and compassion, I take refuge in you. Like that, meditating on the greatness of the refuge, the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, when faith arises in them, as shown before, it is the time to generate common refuge, so take it up, learn what should be learned, and become an inner Buddhist. Once you have become an inner Buddhist, the Buddha you have taken refuge in will protect you, so meditate on the greatness of the root of Dharma, karma and its result. That is also as shown before, with the key point of impermanence, this life will not stay, one will surely die. Even after death, like the Charvakas believe, after annihilation, one will not become nothing, but will be reborn again. That rebirth is also not transferring this very aggregate to the other side. It is also not born from the causeless and conditionless that the outsiders believe in. It is also not born from the unfavorable cause created by other beings such as Ishvara. It is also not born from the random occurrence that happens as one wishes. So from what is it born? The Letter to a Friend says: The aggregate is not from chance, not from time, not from nature, not from essence, not from Ishvara, not from causelessness, but know that it arises from ignorance, karma, and craving. As it is said, one is born under the power of one's own karma and afflictions, therefore, however one accumulates white and black causes, happiness and suffering will arise as a result. Therefore, one should know that happiness and suffering are the result of karma, and from the smallest of actions, one should carefully engage in adopting and abandoning. On karma and its result,

Then, the most important thing is that it arises from meditation; it does not arise from merely hearing and occasionally thinking casually, so one must meditate. One needs to understand this, one needs to hear about this, therefore, the guru's instructions are key. Through reading many sutras and treatises, understanding the workings of cause and effect, having prior hearing and thinking, merely through one thought, initially just contemplating the ripening of the fruits of non-virtuous actions, when a mind of fear arises towards its suffering and lifespan, initially there will be a turning away from the cause, so first one should meditate on the faults of the result. Moreover, in this life there is nothing more frightening than death. As Putowa said, birth is more frightening than death. Among births, if one is born in the lower realms, there is nothing more frightening than that. So, summarize its suffering, and he said to meditate on it in order from large to small. Regarding this, if we take the suffering of sentient beings in hell as an example, Sharawa once said in his letter to a friend: "Here, the suffering of being stabbed violently by three hundred short spears in one day, that is also a small suffering of hell, one should not be frivolous, one cannot even bear the rain." As it is said, human suffering cannot exceed that extent, and even so it cannot be compared to the smallest suffering of hell. If we now have a spark of fire fall on bare skin, or a spark fall on flesh, we will feel very hot. Compared to mindfulness, near the fire of hell, human fire is as cool as snow or clouds. Putowa said that if a person is burning completely in the fire, if one applies a little sandalwood camphor on any part of the body, one will feel a moment of coolness. Similarly, when burning in the fire of hell, if human fire touches any part, there will be a moment of coolness, he said. Similarly, it is said that one must meditate in detail on all the suffering and lifespan etc. of all eighteen hells. In general, the location of hell is said to be from the fifteenth underground level, thirty-two thousand yojanas below Jambudvipa (the southern continent), there is the first hot hell - the Hell of Revival. The Treasury of Knowledge says: "Twenty thousand yojanas below this, is the Avici Hell, its measure is also the same. Above it are the
