Because understanding is slow and it is necessary to summarize all vehicles, Geshe Tonpa said: If an ordinary person with all bondages generates the mind of a Shravaka and practices its path, even if they obtain a superior result that can be squeezed from twenty Sanghas, it will still take longer than eighty-four thousand great kalpas to attain Buddhahood. It is said in the Ornament for Clear Realization, 'Look with your mind.' Therefore, from the very beginning, generating the great Bodhicitta and entering the path of the Great Vehicle is the close path for oneself to attain liberation. One's own attainment of Buddhahood also depends on sentient beings. Even if Shravakas are placed in the category of having permanent liberation, if one abandons the sentient beings who are one's parents in the three realms and seeks liberation alone, there is nothing more shameless than that, as previously stated. Practicing the One Vehicle in this way is also because of the fear of becoming a bad Shravaka. If Shravakas have permanent liberation, and one enters their path and attains Nirvana, then the benefit of others will be permanently interrupted. Even if there is no permanent liberation, one will still be far from benefiting others, therefore one practices the One Vehicle. In either case, one must attain Buddhahood.

Moreover, it is not merely wanting to end temporary suffering, like initially striving to practice the Great Vehicle path, but from the depths of one's heart, from the marrow of one's bones, desiring to attain the state of perfect and complete enlightenment, thereby completely eradicating all suffering from its root. Such a person is called the supreme being among the three levels of beings. Regarding the characteristics of such a great being, Master Sharawa also said: It is not enough for oneself to be liberated from samsara; one must regard all beings as one's parents and desire to liberate all sentient beings from the suffering of samsara. Only then is one considered the most excellent person. If one has such a thought, then one will generate bodhicitta and so on. Just as Gomba told all the elders, in order to liberate all sentient beings from the suffering of samsara, one must attain the state of Buddhahood. The cause for this is bodhicitta, which arises from compassion, which arises from loving-kindness, which arises from knowing and repaying kindness, which arises from seeing all sentient beings as one's mother. Therefore, one should gradually cultivate these. Moreover, this is cultivating the true nature, not conceptual thoughts. Lord Atisha said: In the sutra of beginningless samsara, it is said that the number of times each sentient being has not been each other's mother is more than the number of times one could make jujube seeds from the entire earth. The number of times they have been fathers, etc., is also the same. This sutra has not been translated into Tibetan. The "Yogacarabhumi-sastra" contains all of these meanings. When one is close in this way, one should also contemplate how immensely kind they have been, and then cultivate the loving-kindness that arises from the root of knowing and repaying kindness to all sentient beings. Moreover, this is the instruction passed down from Lama Serlingpa, which makes it easy to generate loving-kindness, so one should cultivate it gradually, starting first with one's own mother and then gradually expanding the object of meditation. One should first think like this: This mother of mine, when I was first born, was like a mere insect, unable to support my own neck, unable to move up or down, and unable to move my hands and feet, yet she raised me to be as big as a yak and showed me the beautiful Jambudvipa. Then, like a sage emerging from a hut or a snake emerging from its skin, she gave everything she had to her child, while the mother herself shrank into something like a gatehouse.
