Where to begin? "Here, killing, imprisonment, and mutilation are performed; there, hell and other realms are created." Since it is said that this alone is most complete, having meditated on the faults of desiring in this way, like the story of the merchants of Rakshasa Island, if one does not look back at desire, even with just the vows of a layperson, one can be liberated from the ocean of existence. If one looks back at desire, then as the commitment increases, the fall becomes more severe, so Sharawa said that since becoming a monk, he has not looked back at desire. Relying on that higher discipline, the object of meditation on samadhi is also, as previously shown, that all conditioned existence is suffering, and that the cause of accomplishing that is the two, karma and afflictions, that exist in their respective bases. The root of that is craving. That arises from desire, so all desires have little taste and great faults, and if one abandons the two, karma and afflictions, then suffering will cease, and the antidote to abandoning karma and afflictions is the noble path. When one becomes absorbed in samadhi in this way, for those four noble truths, there is only the cause and effect of defilement and purification, but other than that, relying on the wisdom that distinguishes the selflessness of the agent, the experiencer of results, the practitioner of the path, and the attainer of results, one abandons the afflictions that have the root of self-view, so one does not accumulate karma motivated by that. If one does not accumulate karma, then one does not take birth in samsara, and that is called realizing cessation or nirvana. Sharawa said: Knowing samsara as suffering is the truth of suffering. That is only suffering, and there is no self of suffering. That arises from the origin of cause, karma and afflictions. That is only origin, and there is no self of the agent. The cessation of those two is the truth of cessation. That is only cessation, and there is no self of the one who ceases. That arises from the path, the three trainings, so it is the truth of the path. That is only the path, and there is no self of the one who practices the path. Therefore, the aspects of the four truths: impermanence, suffering, emptiness, selflessness, cause, origin, arising, the aspects of conditions, cessation, peace, excellence, liberation, path.

Reasoning, practice, and definite arising. When the four noble truths are understood in sixteen aspects, and the selflessness of the person is slightly realized, one can attain from the fruit of stream-enterer to the Arhat with remainder, and in between the non-remainder. On top of that, by meditating on dependent origination, one attains the liberation of the solitary realizer. To this, the Shravakas who cling to extremes, the Vaibhashika school, all consider Nirvana to be the ten non-learning dharmas, or the nature of the five skandhas without outflows. The Sautrantika school considers it like ice melting in the ocean, or like clouds dissipating in the sky, it is just the separation of coarse objects. One cannot abandon the moment and the subtle particles. It is said that this is what is called the intermediate person. Thus, regarding the characteristics of the intermediate person, this learning in the manner of the four noble truths, Denglowa said, regarding the four noble truths, there are two orders: the order of explanation and the order of practice. According to the explanation, suffering should be known, origin should be abandoned, cessation should be realized, and the path should be relied upon. According to the practice, when a patient is afflicted by illness, he relies on a skilled doctor. The doctor first diagnoses the illness, and then prepares medicine that is beneficial for the illness. As a result, the illness is cured and happiness naturally arises. Just like this analogy, when a person understands that all of samsara is suffering, he relies on a lama. Therefore, he ascertains that the cause of suffering is the truth of origin. In order to abandon it, he practices the three trainings of the antidote path. Completely separating from the suffering of the three realms is the truth of cessation. It is said that this is the order of practice. Moreover, in general, those with potential are placed in the three enlightenments, and those without potential are placed in the realms of gods and humans. As it is said, although it seems that those with potential who cannot be led to the supreme person are placed on their respective paths, but in terms of its own nature, it is said that even the lesser and intermediate persons should be led to the supreme person. Sharawa said: Here, what is said is not the path of the Sravaka's own school, but the key instructions for gradually leading to the Mahayana. To this, some say that the lesser and intermediate persons are to be abandoned or discarded by the great person. Why is that? Because the lesser person, no matter how much he has attained before, will be deceived again and again. It is said that some say that the intermediate person is contrary to the great person. This is Atisha's thought.
