Everything is the root cause of suffering. In this way, from the source of karma, the karma of merit and the karma of immovability also appear as the cause of generating samsara, so should they be abandoned? Stingmawa said: In the time of cause, do not abandon the karma of merit; in the time of fruit, do not abandon the leisure and human and divine bodies. Then what should be abandoned? The ignorance that is ignorant of Suchness and the craving for happiness and suffering should be abandoned. The karma of merit is practiced with the wisdom of knowing the four truths as a companion, and it becomes the discipline of the Lesser Vehicle. Similarly, in the time of cause, do not abandon the immovable karma; in the time of fruit, do not abandon the samadhi of the upper realm. What should be abandoned? The ignorance that is ignorant of Suchness and the afflictions that cling to joy and happiness should be abandoned. The immovable karma is practiced with the wisdom of knowing the four truths as a companion, and it becomes the higher mind training of the Lesser Vehicle. The karma of merit and the samadhi of abiding in the mind, with emptiness and compassion as companions, gradually become the discipline and mind training of the Great Vehicle. Sharawa also said: Abandoning the ten non-virtues, dividing them into ten virtues, one can attain the body of humans and gods. By taming with the four truths, dependent origination, and skillful means and wisdom, one can attain the three liberations. Therefore, for similar taming, why not tame with skillful means and wisdom? It is said like this. The cause of generating samsara is karma and afflictions. Starting from the small person who abandons non-meritorious karma, the two karmas of merit and immovability, with the power of companions, practice higher discipline and higher mind training, so that they will not only remain in the karma of generating samsaric bliss, but will be transformed into the path of liberation, thus distinguishing the priority of karma and the path, and the source of afflictions should be abandoned. That is to say, if there are no afflictions, even if there is karma, one cannot take rebirth, just like the seeds in the model. Just like all the Arhats have some karma in their mind stream, but because there are no afflictions, they will not take rebirth. If there are afflictions, it will first create karma, then increase karma, and finally the afflictions will connect to the continuum of rebirth in the six realms.

Because it is created by (afflictions). If there are afflictions, there is the suffering of samsara. If there are no afflictions, there is no suffering of samsara. Therefore, these afflictions have caused suffering in samsara without beginning in the past, and now they are on top of suffering, and in the future, they seem to inflict suffering endlessly. Therefore, one must generate the perception of afflictions as enemies and abandon them. If one recognizes afflictions as enemies, even if one cannot abandon them immediately, it is considered entering the cause of abandonment, so one will abandon them someday, which is a lower-level statement. So, how many afflictions should be abandoned? Desire, hatred, ignorance, pride, view, doubt, these six are the root afflictions. If we summarize them, it is adding pride and jealousy on top of the three poisons, which are the five poisons. If we summarize them further, it is desire, hatred, and ignorance, which are classified as the three poisons, and all of these must be abandoned. Abandoning the origin of karma and afflictions is also done through the path—the three trainings: with higher discipline training, one becomes disgusted with it; with higher mind training, one suppresses it; with higher wisdom training, one destroys the latent habits from the root. And the root of these three is discipline. This is also as previously stated, because one recognizes that all conditioned phenomena are suffering, so thinking about the three realms, not even dreaming of desire, etc., that is the time to become a renunciate and receive the vows of a fully ordained monk, so one should take these vows according to one's own ability. Master Putowa said: Having generated renunciation in that way and becoming a renunciate is called becoming a renunciate with the mind of renunciation. Driven by the same thought to protect the precepts is called the precepts of certain renunciation. The key to protecting it is also said in the Nirvana Sutra: For example, when someone is riding a raft to cross the ocean, a Rakshasa appears from the sky and says to chisel the raft, chisel half of it, chisel a component, chisel the size of a palm, chisel a hole the size of a needle's eye, do not give it anything. Similarly, for the raft of discipline to cross from the ocean of conditioned phenomena, do not give failure, remainder, downfall, individual confession, and even minor faults to the Rakshasa of afflictions.
