Even if one were to stay in the mother's womb for one night and then, upon emerging, donate one gold srang, it would be of no use whatsoever. However, one must stay there no matter what. As it is said in the letter to the student, "For the sake of approaching suffering, various appearances manifest." So it is said. Then, upon being born, there are sufferings such as being pricked by thorns or iron, or being rubbed by rough stones. After that, the stages of childhood, youth, and adulthood gradually pass. The second is the suffering of old age, which is the suffering of losing the perfection of color, the suffering of losing the perfection of form, the suffering of losing the perfection of strength, and the suffering of the senses deteriorating and being unable to enjoy objects. Regarding this manifest suffering of old age, the master said, "If the suffering of old age did not come gradually but came all at once, one would surely vomit blood and die." From birth until old age, the third is the suffering of illness. From the crown of one's head to the soles of one's feet, there is not a single place that does not feel pain. When one is afflicted by a serious illness, in addition to the suffering of the illness itself, one must avoid unsuitable food and drink, even if they are delicious. One must also take unpleasant and bitter medicines. One must endure surgery, moxibustion, and harsh treatments. One cannot behave freely and must endure many sufferings such as nursing and alienation from relatives and friends. In addition to all of these, if one is also influenced by the four sufferings such as encountering unpleasant things, there are also the sufferings of seasonal changes, hunger, thirst, and loss of consciousness, and so on. In short, all unpleasant objects of the six senses are encounters with unpleasant things. Separation from parents, friends, teachers, and possessions is separation from pleasant things, but separation from them is also an encounter with unpleasant things. Encountering the aforementioned unpleasant things is also separation from pleasant things. Therefore, depending on these, many forms of suffering also arise. The suffering of not finding what one seeks. Even if born as a human, merit

Some are born in the doorway without having accumulated any merit, and die at the door and in the corners of walls. Some become poor, white as snow and dull as ash. Suffering from hunger and thirst, they are no different from pretas. From the stories of birth, it is clear that poverty is without hope and without fruit. Even to one's own family, there is nothing to say, and one never experiences joyful festivals in life. Alas, even the words of generosity are scarce. It is said that it will come to pass as it is said. Some are wealthy in the first part of their lives, but in the latter part, their wealth declines, so much so that they have to wander in corners with their children. If one is wealthy, one cannot maintain one's livelihood with wealth. As it is said, 'The expansion of wealth is the bursting forth of the ocean of suffering,' it is also written in the Letter to a Friend: 'How painful it is to have much wealth! Those with few desires are not like that. As many heads as the Naga king has, so many sufferings arise from them.' As it is said, therefore, Sharawa said: 'It is better to be small than great, because everyone will put you in their eyes; it is better to be great than small, but if you do not know how to wield power, you will fall.' The fire of anger will burn you alive. In short, the five aggregates of clinging are said to be suffering. Thus, after experiencing sufferings such as birth, etc., finally, the eighth suffering is called the suffering of death. Coming alone from the midst of perfection, clinging to those things, one cannot avoid death no matter what, and the moment of dying without knowing where one is going will surely come. Dingwa said: 'Few die happily; like falling into an abyss without finding a foothold, suffering arises.' Thus, even if one is born as a human, there is no happiness in one's own nature. Therefore, even if one is born as a god, there are countless sufferings such as death and falling. All the gods of the desire realm have the suffering of the signs of death: the color of the body becomes ugly, one dislikes one's seat, the garlands of flowers wither, dirt accumulates on the clothes, and sweat that was never there before appears on the body. These five are the signs that herald death and falling from the heavens. These occur to the gods residing in the heavens, just like the signs that herald the death of people on earth. The Letter to a Friend says:
