Even while dwelling, contemplate how to generate a mind that cherishes the mother. Similarly, for all sentient beings, remember that they have been your mother and have nurtured you in this way; for the father and all other relatives, remember their kindness in protecting you from various harms and nurturing you with various benefits, and thus generate a mind of cherishing. Thus, by cultivating loving-kindness, (visualize) sentient beings who desire happiness and pleasure, dwelling in samsara, possessing immeasurable suffering. Judging from your own experience, cultivate compassion in the manner of "I cannot bear the suffering of others." Moreover, in the Mahayana sutras, many scriptures have established this. As the "Noble Manjushri Ocean of Wisdom Sutra" says: When the only son of a householder, who is beloved and pleasing, falls into a pit of impurity, his mother and all other relatives cannot bear it, beating their chests, wailing and lamenting, circling around the pit, but they cannot personally jump into the pit to rescue him. But the father does not weep, etc., but jumps into the pit and rescues the son. Similarly, the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas, although they have unbearable compassion for sentient beings dwelling in the impure pit of samsara, they cannot personally dwell in samsara to benefit sentient beings. Bodhisattvas or those who have become Mahayana lineage, although they know that samsara is like an impure pit, for sentient beings who are like an only son, beloved and pleasing, dwelling in the impure pit of samsara, with unbearable compassion, they dwell in samsara to benefit sentient beings. Also, as the "Chapter of the Old Father Losing His Son" says: A father and son wandered into the wilderness, the father found a way out, and one foot had already stepped into his own doorway. When one foot was about to be withdrawn, he remembered his son and returned to the wilderness to look for his son. Similarly, knowing that everything is like a wilderness, and thus generating a mind of renunciation, when accomplishing one's own liberation, one foot has already stepped into the doorway, but at this time, because he cannot bear the sentient beings who are like sons wandering in the wilderness of samsara, he enters the wilderness of samsara to benefit sentient beings. Also, as the "Chapter of the House on Fire Blown by the Wind" says: The house is on fire
