Just as a king arising from the earth is overjoyed and does not give rise to sorrow, so when sorrow arises from the suffering of oneself and others, then showing the selflessness of those who suffer, at the time of becoming extremely joyful, the two selflessnesses are proclaimed. Shantideva said: 'Thus, oneself and others, do not desire fear and suffering, what difference is there from oneself? Why protect that one and not protect the others?' etc. 'By familiarizing oneself with the equality of oneself and others, the Bodhicitta will completely enter.' Thus, it is said to be the key to cultivating Bodhicitta. For the initial practitioner, cultivating Bodhicitta in that way will not be stable. It is necessary to cultivate as Atisha said. Secondly, being bound by the separation of skillful means and wisdom, therefore it is shown that neither should be abandoned. 'Skillful means and wisdom that are separate, wisdom and skillful means that are separate, for what reason are they said to be binding? Therefore, neither should be abandoned.' Thus it is said. That is, as previously shown, if wisdom has skillful means and skillful means also has wisdom, and if it does not become like that, then what fault is there in separating those two? By cultivating only emptiness, which is wisdom separated from skillful means such as the stages of the three types of individuals, one will be bound to the extreme of peace. And those who cultivate only skillful means, separated from the wisdom of cultivating the emptiness of selflessness of persons and phenomena, will also be bound to the extreme of existence. For what reason? Because in the Vimalakirti Sutra it is said: 'Wisdom separated from skillful means binds one to the Shravakas, and skillful means separated from wisdom binds one to Samsara.' Therefore, those who do not abide in those two extremes, Nirvana, and who strive for the meaning of the Buddha, should not abandon both skillful means and wisdom, but should cultivate skillful means with wisdom and wisdom with skillful means. That is to say, when skillful means becomes stable, if it is also indicated by the wisdom that knows the two selflessnesses, then that is cultivation. First, like a person's feet, relying on skillful means to cultivate wisdom, and relying on wisdom to cultivate skillful means, cultivate alternately. After familiarizing oneself in that way, when one enters the state, cultivate simultaneously like the wings of a bird. Even when familiarizing oneself with skillful means, there is no attachment to the reality of the three circles, and wisdom is emptiness.

Even when accustomed to meditation, do not abandon compassion. Those who have taken skillful means as their object, abide in non-objectification, and meditate during both meditative and post-meditative states. This is what Sharawa said. Third, explaining the distinction between skillful means and wisdom: What is wisdom, and what are skillful means? In order to dispel these doubts, the true distinction between skillful means and wisdom should be clearly explained. Abandoning the perfection of wisdom, generosity, and so on, all virtuous dharmas are taught by the Buddhas as skillful means. It is said. That is, from the sutras and treatises, some places where the terms skillful means and wisdom are combined are mentioned. If there is doubt about what wisdom is and what skillful means are in the context of this treatise, in order to dispel these doubts, the true distinction between what skillful means are and what wisdom is in the context of this treatise should be clearly explained. What is it? Abandoning the perfection of wisdom, that is, other than the perfection of wisdom, generosity, and so on, all that are enumerated as virtuous dharmas, all the victorious Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, have taught as skillful means. This is in reference to that aspect. From the implication of directly showing what skillful means are in the context, the dharma other than those skillful means, the perfection of wisdom, must be understood as the wisdom that is inseparable from those skillful means. Sharawa said: We ourselves have no doubt about the two, skillful means and wisdom, and they are established separately. However, in the Ornament of the Sutras, it says: 'Non-conceptual, completely grasping skillful means.' Thus, non-conceptualization is taught as skillful means, and knowing conventional cause and effect is taught as wisdom, and so on. In the Summary of the Great Vehicle, it says that not discriminating in the three spheres is the supreme skillful means. If you are confused by all of these, in order to dispel these doubts, the distinction between the two is clearly explained, that is, abandoning the perfection of wisdom, or erasing 'is,' or all virtuous dharmas other than the perfection of wisdom, such as the perfection of generosity, just as the analogy of drawing the king's image is taught in the Sutra of the Jewel in the Crown, the mind-stream of sentient beings is the canvas.
