Dwelling in the collection and branches of calm abiding as explained, for any object that is suitable to one's own karma, etc., the yogi who places the mind in virtue in the manner of abandoning the five faults with the eight antidotes, when that calm abiding, the actual basis of meditative absorption, is accomplished, not only is that itself accomplished, but having obtained the fourth meditative absorption, which is extremely pure. As it is said in the Ornament of the Sutras: "Having obtained the fourth meditative absorption, which is extremely pure, and having fully grasped non-conceptual wisdom, from contemplating the modes of existence as desired, one will obtain the supreme accomplishment of power." Thus, desiring to obtain direct perception that knows the realm of miraculous powers, by relying on contemplating the modes of existence of each, such as meditating on the body being as light as cotton, the direct perceptions that are desired will also be accomplished. By the power of that, one's own accumulation of enlightenment will be perfected, and all the purposes of sentient beings will be accomplished. That is it. Sharawa said: If one obtains the actual basis of focusing on emptiness in a solitary place, then there is no need for contemplating the modes of existence. Is that not his own personal experience? In general, even if one obtains only the five direct perceptions, they are subject to decline, so one needs direct perception that is free from defilements. For that, one needs the wisdom of higher insight. For that, one also needs to obtain calm abiding. As the Buddha said: "The nature of correct equipoise, will be known as it is." Thus it is. As it is said: "The mind of a distracted person, dwells in the jaws of afflictions." In that way, if the mind is distracted, then there will be no pure discipline either. The mind of enlightenment will not be stable either. Therefore, they also need calm abiding that subdues afflictions. The sign of having obtained calm abiding is that even if one places the body's effort on the tip of a hair, pressing the crown of the head against it and meditating, one can remain for as long as one desires. Because the mind is workable, one can remain on any object that one desires for as long as one desires. But now it seems that people are saying that they have obtained calm abiding without any of those signs. Geshe Tonpa said: If it is pride in accomplishment, that is fine, but otherwise one should abandon individual liberation vows. A young monk from Yungwa said: In this assembly, you alone are young, be able to live to about eighty years old. In the past, an old lay practitioner from Drom said that he had obtained calm abiding, but his afflictions

If it seems that afflictions arise in the continuum, know that it is mixed with obstacles. If someone says they have seen the deity of Yidam, but it seems that afflictions arise in the continuum, know that it is mixed with obstacles, say this and convey it repeatedly, it is said. That means it doesn't matter whether you recite or not. Khampa Lungpa recited at the age of ninety-odd. If the mind truly abides, even if you don't attain the main practice, you can suppress afflictions, and your understanding of what is to be known becomes clearer. Attachment to all desires will also become smaller and smaller. But now, if afflictions become stronger and stronger, and attachment to all desires becomes greater and greater, but you still claim to be practicing, you will not achieve your goal, he said. Third, explaining the training of higher wisdom. The relationship between the training of higher mind and wisdom, showing that separation of means and wisdom leads to bondage, so neither can be abandoned, the difference between means and wisdom, the order of practicing the two, and the training of wisdom itself, there are five aspects in total. First, explaining the relationship between the training of higher mind and wisdom: "Wisdom gone to the other shore, Separated, the obscurations will not be exhausted, Therefore, in order to eliminate, The obscurations of afflictions and knowledge, All without remainder, Wisdom gone to the other shore, The yoga always possessing means, Should be practiced." It is said, that is to say, as mentioned earlier, even if you train in higher discipline and higher mind, because it is separated from the practice of cultivating wisdom gone to the other shore, you cannot abandon the clinging to reality, so its root obstacles will not be exhausted. If the two obscurations are not exhausted, you are still a samsaric being. Therefore, in order to completely eliminate the afflictive obscurations such as attachment and aversion that arise due to ignorance of the four noble truths, and the conceptual obscurations of knowledge that rely on the clinging to reality, one should rely on tranquility and cultivate the yoga of wisdom gone to the other shore, which views the selflessness of persons and phenomena. Without tranquility, just like a candle placed in the wind, wisdom cannot clearly realize the meaning of selflessness. Cultivating wisdom in this way should not be separated from means, and should always be cultivated with the order of the three types of beings and the means of the five perfections.
