Many previous aspects, such as focusing on meditation, have been mentioned. However, that level of satisfaction is not the basis for everyone to determine, so all those are not worth considering as previous aspects. Some say that everything is emptiness, thereby destroying the method. Others say non-conceptualization, thereby preventing all conceptual thoughts, which is also not feasible. Geshe Putowa here once meditated without distinguishing day from night because the wind element entered his eyes, and some such cases occurred, but all those did not produce even a little bit of desire. As someone said, it is mainly that there are some who follow the eight applications of abandoning the five faults, and that is what became famous. Similarly, focusing on any object of focus and keeping the mind in virtue is also like that. As it says in the (Bodhisattvabhumi Sutra): "Abandoning the five faults, the eight applications arise from the cause." Like that, it is established by following the eight applications of abandoning the five faults. Those five faults are: laziness, forgetting the instructions, sinking, excitement, non-application, and application. The first of these is: both idleness and deficient effort. If these two are present, one cannot enter into the meditation of samadhi. Even if one enters, if one forgets the instructions, one will be caught in the cliff of doubt, so one will not become single-pointed on the object of focus. Even if one becomes like that once, if one is separated from mindfulness and awareness, and becomes sinking and excitement, one will become worse than before. At the time when sinking and excitement arise, if one does not make effort to counteract them, one cannot abandon sinking and excitement. Without those, when one seeks to abide naturally on the object of focus, one will eventually lose the object of focus again and leave. Therefore, in the Madhyantavibhaga it says: "Laziness and all the instructions, forgetting, sinking, and excitement, non-application and application, these are considered the five faults." It says like that. The eight applications for abandoning those are also said in that same text: "Abiding and abiding in that, cause and effect as well. Not forgetting the object of focus, knowing sinking and excitement, applying to abandon those, abiding naturally when peaceful." It says like that. In the commentary it says: "The place of effort is desire, abiding is effort. The cause of abiding desire is faith, because if one becomes convinced, desire will manifest. The result of abiding effort is great joy, because by initiating diligence, one obtains the distinction of samadhi."

Return. It is said. The meaning is that initially, there is no samadhi, and the mind is distracted, so there are those faults mentioned earlier. If there is samadhi, one believes that the previous benefits will arise. Relying on the faith that practicing samadhi depends on the instructions that show the object of focus without error, the desire to obtain it arises. If that exists, one exerts effort for the sake of obtaining samadhi. After exerting effort, one obtains a small stage of body and mind being tamed. These four become the antidote to laziness. With the mindfulness that does not forget the instructions showing the object of samadhi, abandon forgetfulness. With awareness, observe whether it has become dull or agitated, or whether, without becoming either of these two, one is properly holding the object of focus. By observing in this way, if it becomes dullness or agitation, one will realize it. If it becomes those, then practice the antidote to dullness and the things that become obstacles, such as the six recollections. Practice the antidote to agitation, such as contemplating weariness. From what is said, it is known that practicing the six recollections, etc., after eliminating dullness, also requires great power of habituation to proceed easily. Since one has not yet reached that level, practice only the recollection of death as the antidote to both of them. If one practices that, for dullness, it can be eliminated like splashing cold water on the face of someone who is falling asleep. For the antidote to agitation, it can be eliminated like hearing the news of one's father's death in the midst of a grand performance, and having no mood to enjoy the performance. The Compendium of Trainings also says that it is the antidote to both. For the antidote to dullness, as said in the context of cultivating calm abiding, one can add weight, gently tap the body with a stick, throw stones, place a lamp in front, stretch out one leg, stretch out both legs, grab the rosary and shake it, and so on. One should also moderate food and drink. Practice in thin clothes, in a cool place, under a clear sky, and in a high place. Wash the face. When there is no dullness or agitation, one should remain in equanimity, and that is also necessary for resting from uninterrupted practice. If one practices intermittently, later one will not even want to generate the mind of practice. Just seeing the bed, one wants to vomit.
