Praise of meditation. Rejoice in the meditation of others. If you don't understand anything yourself, it is difficult to rejoice, and that is wrong meditation. Do everything you can to provide favorable conditions for meditation and remove obstacles. If there is no Dharma meaning for anyone, then it will become very pitiful. If you eliminate this situation immediately, there is no better giving than that. In this way, the best giving is also providing favorable conditions for meditation. When Atisha was living in Nyetang, there were meditators living in Burphur, and I went to see them and was happy for them. However, they only said that they would meditate in the future. The great yogi said that it was just lip service, so he hoped they would come, but they didn't. They said, what do we have that is worth Atisha visiting and being happy about, that Atisha would impart oral instructions. If you work hard on those accumulations mentioned in the Mother Sutra, the result of accumulating accumulations will not be reversed, and you will get them in the future. The favorable conditions for your own meditation will make you a meditator in the future. Helping others and guarding against obstacles will make the favorable conditions complete and no obstacles will arise. This must also be done with pure discipline based on a firm foundation of faith, so always contemplate the three places of faith, especially the greatness of karma and its results. After doing this, if you turn away from sin, the blessings of the Buddha will also descend. Blessing does not refer to anything else. The more firm you are in the Dharma, the more you abandon the inappropriate aspects, and the more you develop antidotes in your mind, the more powerful you become, then blessing has entered, it is said. Second, explaining the object of meditation for cultivating calm abiding: On whatever object, the mind should be placed on virtue. It is said. This is also because it abides in the accumulations and limbs that were just taught, so what is the object of meditation for cultivating calm abiding? From the position of the Hearers, it is necessary to have the four conditions of scriptural basis, realization, order, and non-reversal, an object with these characteristics, which is compatible with one's own karmic connection, faculties, and afflictions, whichever one is fine, focusing on it, the mind is placed on its virtuous aspect.

Therefore, Sharawa said: The object of meditation must also be something that exists in the lineage and is bestowed by the lama. Even if it exists in the lineage, it cannot be self-created or come about randomly. Even if the lama bestows it, if it does not exist in the lineage, it cannot be trusted. Meeting a genuine lama, and from receiving instructions after meeting, giving rise to samadhi, and not losing it after it arises, all of these require accumulating merit. Therefore, strive to accumulate merit in various ways. After accumulating merit, if you meet a lama with clairvoyance, he will guide you to practice any object of meditation that is appropriate to your karma, faculties, and afflictions. If we are not like that, then when practicing the Kadampa's 'Mind Training,' the stages of the three types of individuals are the key instructions. All the objects of meditation spoken of in the Dharma are included in these. If there is karmic connection, all of these have the potential to transform into samadhi, and it will indeed come about in that way. For objects of meditation that tame afflictions, it is fine to practice any of the five methods, such as meditating on the impure to counteract desire. For example, the son of the venerable Maudgalyayana taught two disciples the same object of meditation, but it was not successful. But Shariputra, who was foremost in wisdom, changed the object of meditation, and as a result, they quickly generated samadhi. Therefore, it is not certain that one object of meditation is suitable for everyone, just as one medicine cannot cure all diseases. For those with strong desire, practicing loving-kindness, and for those with strong hatred, practicing ugliness, is not suitable. Counting breaths is also not suitable for those with strong delusion. Only the two types of selflessness are said to be the best signless objects of meditation, but as stated in the 'Ratnavali' and the 'Madhyamakavatara,' if taught when the time is not ripe, two faults will occur. Dependent arising is suitable for everyone. In the 'Stages of Meditation,' it says that one can meditate on the teachings of the twelve branches of scripture, or meditate on the aggregates, etc., or meditate on the image of the Buddha, and all of these are in accordance with reality. Teaching instructions to others must also be transmitted through oral transmission, passed down from one person with realization to another, and not just remain in words. The so-called realized samadhi is like holding a stone in your hand, or placing consciousness on a plank of wood.
