It is said that even during convalescence, one needs to maintain a continuous state of meditation. Apart from that, mere direct perception of remembering past lives can also be achieved through generosity, as mentioned in the Jataka tale of the fragrant warm zanba (roasted barley flour). As it says, "Through the generosity of Dharma, one remembers past lives; young one, know this in this way." Also, in the questions of Prince Singha, it is said that offering lamps obtains divine eyes, and offering music and cymbals obtains divine ears. Discipline (tsul trim) can also accomplish it. It is said that all the gods, as soon as they are born, immediately realize the three places: where they were born from, by what karma they were born, and where they were born. This is the fruit of discipline. Reciting the Bhadracarya also has stories of remembering past lives. When a person from U (Central Tibet, specifically Lhasa area) went to East Bengal, he saw a thirteen-year-old child who could speak the U dialect. When he talked to him, the child said that he lived in a place called "Dri-smed" in U. When the topic of death came up, he said, "Died." (The person) asked, "There was a monk like that, where is he now?" (The child) said, "He died." Then he cried. (The person) asked, "What was he to you?" (The child) said, "He was my Khenpo (abbot or preceptor) in my previous life. I have parents here, and for their sake, I will now return to U to become a monk." (The person) asked, "Where are you from?" (The child) said, "North of Bodh Gaya, there is a hut like this. The monk Sonam-pa who lives there is me." (The person) asked, "Then what is the cause of remembering past lives?" (The child) said, "It is because of reciting the Bhadracarya that I can remember." There are such examples. It is said that when Jowo (Atisha) came to Tibet, he said that (the person) was about thirty years old at that time. It is also said that reciting dharanis such as the Six-Door Dharani can also help remember past lives. We can also accomplish these ourselves, so we should strive for them. In general, remembering past lives helps to complete the accumulation of merit, but it also requires generating disillusionment with samsara, as well as the help of pure discipline and bodhicitta. Without these, it is said that hell beings, pretas (hungry ghosts), and all the gods also have the ability to remember past lives, but that does not become a cause for completing the accumulation of merit. It is said that the abbot of Vikramashila was reborn as a preta. When he was asked if he had certainty about cause and effect, and if he had done anything to harm others when he was ten years old, he said, "We pretas do not have control over our minds."

It is said that if one is born in those realms, even knowing the faults, one cannot turn away from sin. Third, explaining the method of striving in that regard. There are two parts: the teaching that in order to cultivate calm abiding, one must abide in its requisites and limbs, and the explanation of the object of meditation for cultivating calm abiding. The first part is: Because the limbs of calm abiding are completely deficient, even if one strives diligently in meditation, even after thousands of years, samadhi will not be achieved. Therefore, it is said, "One should abide well in the limbs spoken of in the chapter on the requisites of samadhi." That is to say, in order to cultivate calm abiding, one must abide in its requisites and limbs. If the requisites and limbs of calm abiding are completely deficient, that is, if one does not possess them, then, as previously explained, even if one strives diligently in meditating on the object of meditation for cultivating calm abiding, even after thousands of years, that samadhi of calm abiding will not be achieved. For this reason, one who wishes to cultivate calm abiding should first abide well in the requisites and limbs of calm abiding spoken of in the chapter on the requisites of samadhi. Regarding this, Sharawa said, "Is the chapter on the requisites of samadhi the one composed by the teacher Jangchub Zangpo, in which nine requisites of calm abiding are spoken of?" Some also say, "There is a sutra." Others say, "Is it the thirteen requisites spoken of in the Hearer's Ground?" After saying this, he said in his instructions that previously his own Geshe Putowa had not found a definite answer from that. On the roof, he saw the method of accomplishment of Amoghapasha. At the beginning of that was the chapter on the requisites of samadhi. When asked, "Is this it?" he replied, "It is this, it seems somewhat similar." Regarding the explanation of the meaning, he spoke of the way of saying that the four—perfectly pure morality, abiding in solitude, having few desires, and being content—are indispensable. Perfectly pure morality becomes a requisite for calm abiding, also in the manner of the five results. If one's morality is perfectly pure, one will have no regret in one's mind, and samadhi will arise from the increase of joy and happiness in body and mind. If one's morality is impure, samadhi will not arise in one whose mind is filled with the suffering of regret. Now, even when nine evils occur, it seems that the mind will remain stable, but that is not because the Dharma is untrue, but because there is no regret due to lack of faith. Furthermore, in those moralities, because the doors of the senses are closed, the mind is in a state of clarity unpolluted by afflictions.
