If one becomes accustomed to it for a long time, when will it turn into great bliss? Like this, even if you take care of the body and nourish it with enjoyment, it will never help against not getting sick and not dying. It will never abandon. Because laziness is like water, and because impermanence is like dew on the grass. The more this body is nourished by enjoyment, the more wrinkles there will be. Diseases will also increase again. Aging will also intensify again. If you get sick, you will need extra treatment and medicine. If you don't take good care of it, the situation will be reversed. If you don't give up attachment to the body and enjoyment, the happiness of future lives will not come. Considering that the fault of stinginess will lead to rebirth as a hungry ghost, do not accept attachment to it. In this way, because one is not attached to the body, one will not be attached to enjoyment, and thus giving arises, so it is the proximate cause, that is, the meaning of the cause. The proximate cause of ethics is: not accepting the arising of afflictions and near afflictions. Although it is impossible for beginners not to arise at all, once they arise, do not accept them, but recognize their faults like driving away a snake that has climbed onto your lap, thereby loathing it and practicing the antidote. If you accept it, it will provoke all violations of ethics, so you cannot protect ethics. If you do not accept it, the motivation will change, thereby avoiding falling, and you will be able to protect ethics, so it is called the proximate cause. As Phuchungwa said, even now when afflictions are pressing on the outside, you still need to do some preparation underneath. Now, if you don't regard afflictions as enemies, but have taken refuge in Jowo (referring to Atisha). If you regard the enemy as your own, there will be a time when 'Tasma' will come. If you repeatedly see the faults and rely on the antidote, then the number of times afflictions arise in the continuum will decrease, the strength will weaken, the duration will shorten, and eventually they will not arise at all. The proximate cause of patience is: not accepting the arising of anger and resentment, etc. For beginners and beings in the desire realm, it is impossible for these emotions not to arise at all. Once they arise, do not accept them, but abandon them. If you accept it, then, as it is said in the *Bodhicharyavatara*: 'The merit gathered in a thousand kalpas, Giving and offering to the Buddhas, All virtuous deeds, A single anger can destroy.' In this way, all virtuous deeds will be burned. Abandoning sentient beings, bodhicitta.

Also, one should recognize that the mind of attachment (to the eight worldly dharmas) should be abandoned and not accepted. The proximate cause of diligence is to not accept the arising of inferior laziness and the laziness of idleness. If you accept it, you will not even attain a good rebirth, let alone omniscience. If you do not attain omniscience, you cannot accomplish the benefit of others, and therefore you deceive all sentient beings who are your guests. Thinking that by speaking great lies, you will fall into the lower realms. Those who carry the heavy burden of sentient beings on their heads, it is not beautiful for superior beings to walk slowly. Since oneself and others are tightly bound by various kinds of bonds, one should exert oneself a hundredfold. This shows that one should strive as if distinguishing between one sentient being and all sentient beings. As stated in the Compendium of Trainings, one should put on armor, continuously practicing the four aspects of bodhicitta: giving, guarding, purifying, and increasing. The proximate cause of meditation is to not accept the arising of the five obscurations and their sensations. Desire, malice, sleep, drowsiness, excitement, regret, doubt, etc. Among these, sleep and drowsiness make the mind dull, so they are combined into one. Excitement and regret distract the mind, so they are combined into one. If you accept these five obscurations, desire and malice will hinder the guarding of precepts. Sleep and drowsiness will hinder the practice of mental discipline. Excitement and regret will hinder the practice of wisdom, thus one cannot attain samadhi. If you experience the five obscurations, you will lose what you have gained, so do not accept them. Our own minds are always controlled by the five obscurations, so we must strive to cultivate the antidotes to them. Right now, we have not even tasted a little bit of the bliss of meditation. If we have, it is even coarser and harder to abandon than the pleasure of desire. The five aspects of wisdom are: knowing the benefits of virtuous results, knowing the cause of virtue, knowing the obstacles to virtue, knowing the inverted understanding of virtuous results, and knowing the non-inverted understanding of virtuous results. Now, if you do not even understand the illusion-like nature, it is said that all other things are useless. If the path of seeing has not arisen, what good is worldly dharma? One must have some understanding of the Dharma. Without understanding these, one wishes to generate illusion-like wisdom.
