Therefore, I feel ashamed and awed because I am still unable to abandon any faults of sentient beings. Eighth, mindfulness composed of five branches is: When past downfalls occur, correcting them immediately upon remembering them is mindfulness based on the past extreme. In the future, if downfalls occur, also correcting them according to the Dharma, putting on the armor of correction, is mindfulness based on the future extreme. Downfalls that occur in the present, correcting them immediately like a strong wrestler, rising from the seat itself, or even if rising from the seat is not accomplished, like the great ocean not associating with corpses, not associating with downfalls, correcting them immediately, is mindfulness based on the middle extreme. Wherever one dwells, with whomever one associates, whatever one enjoys, whatever one does, and how one proceeds, one should carefully consider so as not to violate the bodhisattva's precepts, and in order to benefit others, not to interrupt the attainment of great bodhi. If one finds something that obstructs, one should not do it, which is mindfulness that goes at the beginning of all actions. Regarding conduct, as it is said in the sutra: 'The state of body and mind should be examined again and again. In short, that alone is the characteristic of guarding mindfulness.' Like this, at all times, taking all actions of body, speech, and mind with mindfulness and awareness, engaging and withdrawing, and not producing faults, is accompanying mindfulness. Among these, the first three are about correcting downfalls, and the latter two are about not producing faults. Ninth, the perfection of ritual is: For immediate affairs, such as the affairs of Dharma robes and alms bowls, one should act in a way that is not despised by worldly scholars and does not contradict the sacred Vinaya. For all four postures, one should also do the same, as stated in the five sets of four categories, etc., as taught in the 'Profound Instructions' and so on. For the activities of virtuous practice, such as meditation and reading the Dharma wheel, one should also do the same. Potowa said: 'We people, for all these, do not have a basis for understanding or discussing the Dharma. When walking, like a lost cow at sunset, the eyes look in all four directions. The steps are faltering and staggering.'

No matter what is gathered, it is said to be as irresistible as a well-fought army. Tenth, abundant living: As it says in the 'Golden Garland of the Teacher': 'To restrain the senses for the sake of deceptive gain and respect; to speak softly first for the sake of accumulating gain and respect; to praise the possessions of others for the sake of obtaining; to measure by gain, for the sake of profit; to openly revile others; to desire gain for gain; to praise what was previously obtained.' Like that, abandoning the five wrong livelihoods, abandoning living by the four kinds of agriculture, and even abandoning living by crafts, because living by teaching the Dharma is also counted as living by crafts, so abandoning all of that, at midday taking only what comes onto the outstretched palms when receiving alms, and not even contemplating where tomorrow's livelihood will come from, that is true practice. Now, those who are sharp-eyed and quick-footed get nothing. It seems that even the most fortunate person will not receive a mouthful or a sip of food and drink that has not been obtained through wrong livelihood. The precepts of restraint have no time limit; one must learn everything from the day one takes the vow, so even if one has taken full ordination for a hundred years, one should learn from the one who takes full ordination today. Sharawa said that even a tiny misdeed obstructs the attainment of omniscience for the benefit of others, so abandon it. Similarly, regarding the precepts of accumulating virtue, Puto Ba said that the standard is when the ten qualities of abiding nearby are complete, namely the five qualities of abiding nearby of the five perfections, and the five of wisdom, making ten. Among these ten, the five of wisdom also seem to be aimed at temporary cause and effect, so even if all those texts are attributed to oneself, they will ultimately become the abiding nearby of ultimate wisdom. Sharawa said that the abiding nearby of generosity is: not accepting even the slightest attachment to body and possessions. If one accepts attachment to the body, then as a condition for that, one needs possessions, so one will also be attached to possessions and unable to give them up. Therefore, for the body and life that will be abandoned, like dew on water and blades of grass, be without attachment.
