It is said that when he went to see it with great joy, it looked like he was observing a fast. Therefore, whoever takes refuge in someone must keep their teachings. For example, whoever takes refuge in a king must accomplish his work and keep his laws. If this is not done, not only will the benefits of relying on him not come, but there is also a risk of being punished, or if the laws of the king on whom one relies are kept, one will be considered the king's person. If the laws are not kept, one will not be considered the king's person. Similarly, if one takes refuge in the Three Jewels but does not keep their teachings, one will incur faults contrary to them, or one will not be considered a Buddhist, so one must learn their teachings. As Sharawa Chenpo said: The uncommon is like what is said in the Compendium of Perfections, it also appears only in the meditation on the essence of aspirational bodhicitta. In the common, there are three individual teachings and four common teachings. All of these, if one thinks that they are hindering the attainment of Buddhahood for the sake of others and protects them, then they become uncommon. All the teachings of individual liberation vows, etc., that have been taken, are the oral instructions to be constantly recited, contemplated, and meditated upon. It is said that, therefore, regarding the three individual teachings of the Three Jewels, the first is that having taken refuge in the Buddha Jewel, one does not prostrate to other gods, does not make offerings with flowers and incense, etc., and there is no fault in giving torma with compassion. Thus it is taught. Similarly, Geshe himself said: Even if one does not think that prostrating to other gods abandons refuge in the Buddha, and does not sincerely regard them as a place of refuge, abandoning refuge in the Buddha is like when a helpless benefactor goes to the king's palace to deliver the bride price, everyone is busy, and when asked, they say they are inviting the Buddha. Hearing the sound of the Buddha, the habits of previous lives awaken, and without the opportunity to sleep, he has faith in the Buddha. The Buddha's rays illuminate the entire city, and the benefactor wonders whether it is dawn or the Buddha's light, so he goes to the city gate and sees a worldly deity statue and prostrates to it, taking refuge in it.

Even without awareness, just by prostrating, there's a story of darkness receding, that's known. It's not that the Buddha accepted offerings, but the greatness of dependent arising exists in that way. So-called other gods are those held as gods by outsiders. Most say they hold Brahma as a god, who is a form realm being. Powerful ones, sons of the twenty-eight constellations, and wealth gods, etc., are the near powerful ones. The sun and moon, Ishvara, Vishnu, etc., are mostly gods of the four great king lineages. Regarding those gods, with wisdom, they don't even know what will happen to themselves tomorrow, because they don't know what will happen now. As for power, when their own time of death arrives, they don't even have the power to extend one or two breaths. Lacking love, if punishment descends, those gods themselves will kill, like the owner of a flock of sheep. The Buddha's knowledge is that he knows suffering beings, their suffering, the cause of that suffering, and all the methods of saving from suffering, like an Emblica fruit placed in the palm of his hand. Power is such that even if all the powers of all beings in the world, demons, and those belonging to the demonic class are combined, they wouldn't match even a hundredth or a thousandth part of the power of a stream-enterer Shravaka. How could the Buddha's power be compared? If it benefits beings, then saving all beings from suffering and its cause at the same time, and placing them on the Buddha's ground, there is no obstacle. With compassion, he regards all beings without discrimination as if they were his only child, and even if it were necessary to tame all beings simultaneously in a single instant, there would be no exceeding the time. Potowa said: Just as it's impossible to abandon one's own refuge, a Chakravartin king, and go for refuge to his water-carrying maidservant, if one has good faith in the Buddha's wisdom, compassion, and blessings, is it easy to merely not take refuge in other gods? Saying that, if one truly investigates, it seems difficult to have faith in the Buddha and not rely on other gods. Regarding things named Dharma protectors, it seems blessings are quickly received, and offerings and service are performed as if all happiness and well-being were in their power.
