।। Such wise ones should be known here as all-pervading. Having spoken of the four all-pervading ones, the all-pervading of sentient beings alone is the most important. The three types of beings who work for the benefit of all sentient beings must be placed in the three states of nirvana. They must be placed on the path of the three vehicles. To that end, being skilled in all vehicles through wisdom is a branch of the other all-pervading. Thirdly, regarding the distinction of the basis, although no distinction is made between the Buddha and the Dharma, the Sangha is specifically referred to as the Bodhisattva Sangha of non-retrogression. That is because non-retrogression from the Dharma is spoken of on the eighth ground, and it is also spoken of above the first ground. It is also spoken of in the Mother Sutra from the stage of ascertainment onwards: From the stage of ascertainment onwards, On the paths of seeing and meditation, Whichever Bodhisattvas abide, Here is the assembly of non-retrogression. From then on, the signs of that arise. Those of good and aspirational lineage, Those of steadfast mind and extraordinary conduct, The three immeasurable Bodhisattvas, Are said to always strive. In this way, its Dharma assembly exists from the path itself. The term 'noble' also means 'gone far away'. From the very moment of generating the first thought, they have gone far beyond all worldly beings, Shravakas, and Pratyekabuddhas. It is not that Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas are not taken as objects of refuge because their blessings are small or inferior, but because the paths are different. For example, going to Bodh Gaya is like not being helped by a companion who is only going as far as Tölung (present-day Tölung Dechen County, Lhasa). Even if one initially sets out for India itself, one will not succeed if one becomes discouraged along the way, hence it is said to be non-retrogressive. Thus, in order to accomplish omniscience for the sake of others, it is impossible to succeed without relying on the blessings of the Three Jewels. Therefore, one must rely on them, as Geshe Tonpa said: No matter how famous the efforts of this life may be, if there is no such merit, one will not attain Buddhahood no matter how long one practices. One attains enlightenment by relying on the increase of maturation and cause-similarity. It is not just that, but one attains enlightenment because even a small root of virtue becomes vast through the blessings of the mind of enlightenment. It is not just that, but the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas

It is said that one can only attain enlightenment by relying on the blessings of those. When the righteous man Jokchok Yang placed his right palm on the crown of the head of the noble Norsang, in his vision, he went before all the Buddhas of the ten directions, merely folding his palms before some, merely receiving teachings before others, practicing pure conduct before some, and practicing the conduct of a Bodhisattva for as many kalpas as there are dust particles in a field before others. It is said that as he raised his hand, he was sitting before him with his palms folded. When asked about this to Potowa, he said that it was no different from actually doing those things and that the accumulations were completed. Therefore, the former is the definitive meaning. Furthermore, without relying on the guide, the Buddha; the actual path, the Dharma; and the companions who practice the path, the Sangha, it is impossible to achieve. Therefore, relying on them for this purpose is called special refuge. Although having faith after recognizing them as objects of refuge is from the first bhumi onwards, it is necessary to have faith in the objects of refuge before everything else. Therefore, from a young age, one should meditate on the greatness of the Three Jewels of refuge. During this time, the lama gives encouragement, generating faith that seems to see them directly. Even if kneeling or squatting, one should show respect by folding one's hands and taking refuge three times. Before taking refuge in this way, one should also manifest love and compassion for all sentient beings. One should also manifest the greatness of the Three Jewels. One should regard the virtuous friend as the Buddha. One should also remember one's own continuum of aggregates of appropriation, which are like dreams and illusions, and arbitrarily assign names to them. The lama will ask about these and have them meditated upon, and will also allow them to rest in between, giving these instructions and having them meditate continuously. It is said that only Geshe Tonpa had all these practices perfectly. Yogis and monastic people did not initially have all these practices either; later, the Geshes bestowed their kindness. The Sangphupas said that Atisha's kindness pervades everything. Potowa went to attend the consecration ceremony of the reliquary of Geshe Tonpa, and some of them generated Bodhicitta.
