To attain ultimate liberation, one must achieve Buddhahood. To achieve Buddhahood, one must generate Bodhicitta. To generate Bodhicitta, one must accumulate merit. If a genuine thought arises that one must do these things, then a Bodhisattva will even constantly weep and sell their own flesh to make offerings. But now, because there is no such faith, people perform simple rituals. As Putowa said, one divides oneself into ten parts and the offerings into ten parts, and then performs the oiling ceremony. Even selling a small piece of land to make offerings and performing the oiling ceremony, after death, few can even grasp a corpse. Holding the key to the treasury, among his attendants, Dromtönpa (འབྲོམ་སྟོན་པ་རྒྱལ་བའི་འབྱུང་གནས,1005-1064) said that Atisha only had Duru Rupa around him. In this way, after offering whatever one actually possesses, one should also add the seven-branch offering mentioned in the "Samantabhadra's Prayer of Good Conduct." Regarding this, Sharawa said: Geshe Dromtönpa, at the beginning of the aspiration to practice goodness, spoke two verses of offering, which Atisha divided into seven branches, and this is still being done now. After saying this, Putowa explained the words spoken by Geshe Dromtönpa himself. Teacher Magzhi Gompa had asked Gompa Rinchen Lama, and it is said that he was also a disciple of Atisha. Teacher Gompa was also a teacher, but because Putowa said the words spoken by Dromtönpa, he did not ask. Even if the meaning here is forgotten, it is said that one should make extensive offerings during practice, so there is no conflict. The former is the actual arrangement of offerings, and the latter seems to be an imagined offering. The latter is a torma like Mount Meru, and everything cannot be actually obtained. Furthermore, only excellent and sacred actions are mentioned. It is said that this refers to the seven-branch offering, but the text here does not say to do these. After making offerings in this way, the connecting ritual is taking refuge, especially the actual action. Regarding this, Sharawa said: In general, the order of taking refuge is stated in the Ornament of the Sutras: "All harms and bad destinies, and non-means, and destructible aggregates, inferior vehicles, therefore, are the supreme refuge." From these words, it can be seen that taking refuge out of fear of harm and bad destinies is the stage of a person of small capacity. Wanting to be liberated from destructible aggregates is the stage of a person of medium capacity. Here, it is also the stage of liberation from inferior vehicles, harm and bad

If I also take refuge with the intention of benefiting others and seeking omniscience, then it becomes a special refuge. There are three special features of special refuge. The first is the special feature of time. "Until the essence of enlightenment," the essence of enlightenment refers to the enlightenment of Buddhahood and the essence of the earth, the Vajra Throne. Until the enlightenment of Buddhahood is attained, the essence of the earth cannot be subdued, so the meaning is the same. Therefore, one must take refuge until it is attained. As stated in the Ornament of the Sutras, "This is because one desires that reality, and that commitment is also known from compassion." Like this, it must be distinguished only by such intention. Without such intention, even if one speaks of reaching the essence of enlightenment, it becomes mere words. The second is the special feature of intention. "With minds that do not turn back," this refers to what one does not turn back from. First, with the force of a strong pulling force, one does not turn back from the intention to benefit others. It is like a lame child being carried away by water, and one does not have the hand to grab him, like asking for help from someone who has hands in a dry land. Sentient beings are carried away by the waters of karma and afflictions in the causal stage, and in the fruitional stage, they are carried away by the four great rivers of suffering, and one arises with unbearable compassion for this. Because one cannot grab them as if one's own hand is lame, one takes refuge in the Three Jewels, who are like those with hands, when one cannot grab them. Once one attains the essence of enlightenment, one acts for the sake of supreme benefit. "Refuge is only the Buddha, the Able One has the Dharmakaya, and the Sangha is also the ultimate of that." Or, "The sole protector of all beings, in truth, is the Buddha." Like this, one will transform into the nature of the Three Jewels. So until one transforms into that, the intention to take refuge for the sake of others will not turn back no matter what. Geshe Gonpa also said, "Becoming a protector of others is something that must be done." Therefore, in the Ornament of the Great Vehicle Sutras, it says, "Whoever enters to save many sentient beings, is skilled in possessing wisdom that goes everywhere in the vehicle, whoever in Nirvana, the retinue is peaceful, and the taste is one.
