All these teachings and words that rely on the Lama, all the merits and happiness that we have gained, are all due to the kindness of the Lama. Therefore, if we know this and repay the Lama's kindness, then the merits that have not yet arisen will arise, and the merits that have already arisen will not decline, but will increase more and more. If we do not know this, and think that these merits are the result of our own efforts, or merely luck and coincidence, then these merits will not arise. Even if some merits have arisen slightly before, they will decline. This is the instruction that is taught. Therefore, we must regard all merits and happiness as the kindness of the Lama, just like the Khampa region. When Putowa passed away, everyone should do this. Because of the strength of the crowd, Kacha Penpun obtained things. He himself made records, prepared porridge for Geshe Tonpa's manuscript, starting with the Eight Thousand Verse Prajnaparamita Sutra, and sent many offerings to Geshe Dengpa, and then sent them to Reting Monastery. At the beginning of the letter, it was written: "Due to the kindness of the virtuous friend, even bad things can barely make a living." Geshe Tonpa laid out the seat, offered the mandala and flowers, and talked as if he had actually met him. Now, no merit has arisen, and even if a little has arisen, they do not say from their mouths that it is the kindness of the Lama, but treat it as if it fell from the sky. In this way, future merits will not arise, and the little that was there before will also decline. This is the greatness of dependent origination. How do we know that this is the case? There was a yogi of low birth who had the trick of using his magical powers to make unpleasant sounds from the north to pick fruits. He picked fruits from there and offered them to the king, and he also enjoyed them himself. A Brahmin also wanted to do this, so he asked him for this trick. The yogi thought that this person was of a high caste and did not want to subdue him, so even if he gave him the trick, he would not obtain magical powers, so he said that he did not give it to him. All of these are just tricks. Geshe Tonpa said to Lhabton that if you do not subdue your arrogance and do not have faith and respect for the Lama, no merit will arise, just as Jowo Tonpa said that the water of merit cannot fill the bladder of arrogance. At that time, Lhabton was lying next to his seat, and one night, that yogi got drunk

Having emerged from the feces, he lay on the bed. The Brahmin, fearing the bed would collapse, leaned on the bedpost while lying down. At that moment, the man vomited, covering the Brahmin's head and body entirely. Upon seeing this in the morning, the Brahmin felt both ashamed and annoyed. He thought, "Now his arrogance has been thoroughly defeated." So he gave him the oral instructions, enabling him to gain magical powers, pick fruits, and act as before. At that time, the Brahmins said, "This person has taken this inferior being as his guru. Without the guru's oral instructions, merit cannot arise. The only one who possesses the oral instructions is this inferior being." So they spat at him, saying that it was just an oral instruction. Later, on one occasion, the Brahmin was among a group of his own kind when he saw the yogi approaching nearby. Fearing that if he openly stood up to greet him, he would be recognized as having taken him as his guru and be expelled from the Brahmin community, he felt respect in his heart but did not stand up. The yogi said, "Are you not taking fruits from Une'u Gsing?" After that, his magical powers diminished, he could not obtain fruits, and the Brahmin lineage also declined. That is the story. Furthermore, the teacher Sangye Yeshe said that the teacher Jampal Shenyen was residing in the northern region, so he went to search for him. A nun led the way, and a monk held a hoe. They met a person who was plowing a field. He asked, "Where are you going?" They replied, "We are going to search for the teacher Jampal Shenyen." The person said, "From now on, no one will hold onto him anymore." After staying there for the night, since he was a monk, he lit a fire in the evening. From within the fire, he roasted a frog. In this way, he engaged in observation and contemplation, and he realized that that person was him. There, the teacher said, "Do you want to request siddhis from me, or from the yogini?" He replied, "I request from you, the teacher." So that very night, through his blessings, he obtained siddhis, and the mandala of the Guhyasamaja deities manifested directly. Later, while the teacher Sangye Yeshe was teaching the Dharma to a group of disciples, that person came in the guise of a beggar. Fearing that the disciples would lose faith, he felt respect in his heart, but thinking that he would serve him after the Dharma session was over, he pretended not to see him. As a result, his eyes fell out and landed on the ground. He was extremely frightened and chased after him, begging for forgiveness.
