It is said that this is like taking the basis of everything as the basis of a person. For ordained people who lack a foundation and have obstacles, they should start by applying themselves to each skandha. If they are very poor, they will return again; if they have good character, they will also return again. Right now, our own situation is like this, so even if ordained people have not abandoned the root downfalls, etc., if they encounter someone who can tame their mind like an old layperson, then, Lord Atisha said: "There is no need to redo the ritual, just keep it as it is." If, at the time of taking the Pratimoksha vows, pure intention does not arise, then later, merely taming the mind is not enough; the ritual itself needs to be redone from the beginning. Because the Pratimoksha vows are more important than not needing to redo the ritual, it is necessary to retake them and not act carelessly. As Lord Atisha said, it is said in the biography of the noble Ananda: Initially, the Blessed One did not turn back, because he was the last existence, so he completed his ordination through the "Bhikkhu come" method. After that, he took the vows, but just seven days later, the people of the Lotus family obtained the power of the Chakravartin, and he had no thought other than wanting to rule the country. The Blessed One led him back and forth using various methods, showing him the Thirty-three Heavens, causing him to be separated from attachment to consorts and the kingdom. At that time, his mind turned to the future, and he became supremely respectful of the precepts, but he was still counted among those who had broken their vows. The Blessed One then showed him hell, causing him to be separated from attachment to hell. Then, he gradually showed him the sufferings of humans, causing him to be disgusted with all of samsara, thereby transforming into the discipline of definite renunciation, and he attained Arhatship without redoing the previous ritual. Now we have gone far away, saying that we will rely on a virtuous spiritual friend and engage in study and contemplation, but everyone's thoughts are no more than the level of Ananda who has not seen the Thirty-three Heavens, and they are unable to elevate their minds. Having learned from a spiritual friend who is like a close sibling, they think of returning to their homeland to seek wealth, and upon returning, they treat the friends and enemies from their lay life as their later enemies and friends. They treat the enjoyments from their lay life as their later enjoyments. In the Ragamaba monastery, someone said, "There is a buzzing everywhere in Ragama because of reading books," and then they joined their palms in the Kavalimudra. All of us are the same.

Yes. Outwardly, the behavior of Gawa and Kunga seems identical, but their inner thoughts are vastly different. We, too, may appear resolute on the outside, but inwardly we long to return home, wanting only to care for our relatives, our village, and our deities. It is said that such thoughts alone cannot transform the vows we take and uphold into a path to liberation. Taking and keeping vows must be accompanied by the kind of renunciation mind mentioned earlier. Therefore, in the process of learning higher discipline, renunciation is also a wish. So, contemplate the faults of all inner and outer desires and abandon them. Regarding the faults of desire, it is said from the beginning of practice: "Here, there is killing, binding, and cutting; in the next life, one creates hells and so on." Because this is the most comprehensive summary, one should contemplate the faults of desire in this way. Like the story of the merchants on Rakshasa Island, if one does not look back at desire, even the vows of a layperson can liberate one from the ocean of samsara. If one looks back, the greater the promise, the greater the transgression when it is broken. Sharawa said that from the time of ordination, one should never look back at desire. Relying on higher discipline, the object of meditation should also be, as previously shown, to contemplate that all of samsara is suffering, and that the cause of suffering is the two—karma and afflictions—that exist in one's own continuum. The root of these is craving. Because craving arises from desire, all desires have little pleasure to taste but great faults. If karma and afflictions are eliminated, suffering will cease. The antidote to eliminating karma and afflictions is the noble path. When one enters into samadhi in this way, one should view the Four Noble Truths merely from the perspective of cause and effect of defilement and purification, rather than from the perspective of the actor, the experiencer of results, the practitioner of the path, and the attainer of results. Relying on the wisdom that distinguishes selflessness, one abandons the afflictions rooted in the view of self, and thus does not accumulate karma caused by afflictions. If one does not accumulate karma, one will not take birth in samsara, and this is the manifestation of cessation, which is called nirvana. Sharawa said, "Recognizing samsara as suffering,"
