Through the power of the two unwavering karmas and friends, I have practiced the higher trainings of discipline and mind. Therefore, they are not merely karmas that generate the happiness of samsara, but are transformed into the path of liberation, thereby distinguishing the beginning and end of karma and the path. Furthermore, they make the origin of afflictions something to be abandoned. That is, if there are no afflictions, even if there is karma, one cannot take rebirth, just like barley in a mold. Although noble arhats have some karma in their mindstreams, they do not take rebirth because they have no afflictions. If there are afflictions, they first accumulate karma, then increase karma in the middle, and finally, afflictions connect the continuum of rebirth in the six realms. Therefore, if there are afflictions, there is the suffering of samsara; if there are no afflictions, there is no suffering of samsara. Therefore, these afflictions have caused suffering in beginningless samsara in the past, are placing us on suffering now, and will connect us to suffering endlessly in the future. Therefore, we must generate the recognition of afflictions as enemies and abandon them. If we recognize afflictions as enemies, even if we do not abandon them immediately, we are entering the cause of abandonment, so we will abandon them someday. This is the lower level statement. So, how many afflictions should be abandoned? Desire, hatred, ignorance, pride, views, and doubt are the six root afflictions. If we condense them, we add pride and jealousy to the three poisons, making five poisons. If we condense them further, they become the three poisons: desire, hatred, and ignorance. Therefore, all of these should be abandoned through enlightenment. Abandoning the origin, karma, and afflictions is also done through the three trainings of the path: the training of higher discipline causes aversion, the training of higher mind suppresses, and the training of higher wisdom destroys the latent tendencies from the root. The root of these three is discipline. That is, as stated before, because we recognize that all conditioned phenomena are suffering, the thought is that there is no desire for the three realms, even in dreams, etc. This is the time to generate the vows of ordination and full ordination, so we should take these vows in accordance with our own intelligence. Putowa said: When such a thought arises, one should ordain with the mind of renunciation.

Know that, guarding the precepts propelled by that very thought is called the precept of definite arising. The oral instruction for guarding it also comes from the Nirvana Sutra. For example, when a person rides a raft to cross the ocean, a Rakshasa appears from the sky and demands the raft, half of it, one oar, the size of a palm, and a hole the size of a needle's eye, but nothing is given to it. Likewise, for the raft of precepts to cross the ocean of existence, failures, remnants, downfalls, individual confessions, and even minor transgressions should not be given to the Rakshasa of afflictions. If minor transgressions are given, one will also sink in the ocean of existence and will not reach the shore of Nirvana. Thus, renouncing samsara and relying on the thought of Nirvana, ordaining and instructing in the precepts, all of this is the duty of the Khenpo. The word "Upadhyaya" (Tibetan transliteration: ཨུ་པ་དྷྱ་ཡ་) comes from "doing, doer, what is done," meaning to make one renounce samsara, to bestow a firm thought of Nirvana, to bestow the learning of higher precepts, just as a potter is called one who makes pottery from clay, so one who makes an Arhat from an ordinary person is called a Khenpo. Nowadays, Khenpos and Acharyas do not tame and guide the mind in this way, ask about obstacles, and then ordain. Those who are self-righteous say, "This life is happy, and in the next life you will become a god," and ordain to that extent. After some time, they forget about the gods of the next life, and they also forget about the happiness of this life, and they end up suffering. Those below them are either oppressed by relatives, nobles, creditors, or enemies, or they have no means of livelihood, or they are disturbed by evil spirits, or they are abused by their parents, and they are just barely surviving. When worldly people fight, they ask about their family background, wealth, and who they have backing them. Likewise, the Sangha and the Khenpo and Acharya should also ask about their family background, poverty, and three aspects of their character. Nowadays, if there is a poor person, they do not even look at their family background, and all those with obstacles are ordained. Among these three, only those with a bad family background and foundation are the most important. Geshe Ston.
