Not only the suffering of the lower realms, but also all that appears as happiness in samsara is turned away from without attachment, because it is understood that their very nature is suffering and deception. Furthermore, all actions and afflictions that accumulate samsara are called sins here. The 'intermediate person' is one who abides in the nature of abandoning such sinful actions, and whose fruit to be obtained is the peace of nirvana itself, a person who seeks only peaceful nirvana. The 'who' refers to the lesser person who seeks happiness in samsara, and the 'only' refers to the supreme person who seeks peaceful nirvana without abiding for the benefit of sentient beings. These two are excluded, and that is the intermediate person. Regarding the method of learning its characteristics, the great Sharawa said to the elders of Gongmowa: 'Let alone the suffering of the three lower realms, wherever one is born in samsara, it is suffering. Knowing that there is no happiness, one becomes disgusted with samsara, like wanting to escape from prison, or like a bird on a frozen lake, knowing that there is no place to stay. This is what is called the intermediate person. If you have such a thought, you should learn the method of liberation from samsara more urgently than putting out a fire that suddenly burns on your clothes or head, and strive to practice the three paths.' As it is said. First, one must know suffering, and in order to abandon the cause of suffering—the origin, one relies on the three trainings of the path in one's own mindstream, realizes the cessation, and practices in the manner of the four noble truths. The method of knowing suffering is: as mentioned above, by learning the characteristics of the lesser person, one believes in karma and its effects, abandons sins, and performs virtuous deeds, so that one can independently obtain a good rebirth. But a good rebirth is also the basis for achieving liberation. As Sharawa said, 'Wherever one is born in samsara, there is no happiness, only suffering.' Even if one only obtains a good rebirth, there is no happiness, only suffering. Even when born as a human, one is always tormented by the eight sufferings such as birth. First, the so-called suffering of birth, for those who have not accumulated merit, from the moment the consciousness of the intermediate state enters the mother's womb, they feel darkness, filth, and thorny thickets.

There will be a vision of falling into a deep pit or falling off a cliff. Accumulating merit will also bring visions of sitting on high places or ascending into mansions. Then, from the mixing of the parents' seed and the intermediate state consciousness, a sprout of name and form (Sanskrit: nāmarūpa) is formed. It gradually changes, starting from a soft state, changing every seven days. When the five limbs have grown, there is the suffering of feeling tightly bound by iron and wooden fetters, and being pierced by the tip of a sharp blade. The place of dwelling is below undigested food, above digesting food, and in the midst of impure things. Sharawa said: 'Now, no matter how much desire you have, even if you were to stay one night in your mother's womb, and upon coming out, you were to give away one gold srang, it would be of no use.' However, one must stay there no matter what. In a letter to a student, he said: 'For the sake of approaching suffering, it is merely an appearance.' Just as he said. Then, upon being born, there is also the suffering of being whipped by thorns or rubbed by rough stones. Then, the stages of childhood, youth, and adulthood gradually pass. The second is the suffering of old age. The suffering of losing beautiful complexion, the suffering of losing a graceful figure, the suffering of losing strong strength, and the suffering of not being able to enjoy objects due to the decline of the senses—these sufferings of old age are manifestly evident. To this, Jamyang Zhepa said: 'If the suffering of old age did not occur gradually but occurred all at once, one would inevitably vomit blood and die.' From birth until old age, the third is the suffering of illness. From the crown of one's head to the soles of one's feet, there is not a single place that does not feel pain. When seized by a serious illness, in addition to the suffering of the illness itself, one must abstain from even delicious foods and drinks if they are not suitable. One must eat all medicines that are foul-smelling and bitter-tasting. One must endure surgery, moxibustion, and rough treatments. One cannot live freely, and there are many sufferings such as nursing the sick and constant quarreling.
