I must meditate without any distraction. As soon as I am slightly distracted, I become loose. Meditating like that will cut off sins, as Sharawa said. In the "Letter to a Friend," it says: "Constant and manifest attachment, and without antidote, deeds arising from the field of merit and the principal, good and non-good, these five are great, therefore strive diligently in doing good." As it is said, first one must abandon the great ones. Abandoning the great ones is not to despise the small ones either. Eventually, all the subtle ones must also be abandoned. If one always despises the subtle ones, then the subtle ones themselves will become great because of always doing them. It seems that all the great ones have gathered in us now. Even if all others are not complete, even a single subtle misdeed, if one always despises it, is said to be great. It seems that we have already fallen into hell just by despising a single fingernail. All the learning of discipline and the great prayers have also overturned all the practices of the old practitioners, and we are still fussy about fingernails. Every day, we ourselves generate about twenty or thirty sins of fingernails. It does not depend on a special field, nor is it always done. Even if it is done only once, if strong afflictions of attachment and hatred arise, it is called manifest attachment and becomes great. Now is the time when all afflictions arise only strongly. Even if the other three are not complete, all deeds without antidote are said to be great. Even with the four powers of antidote, it is difficult to suppress sins. Even if all others are not complete, relying on the field of merit, the Three Jewels or special people such as Bodhisattvas, and the principal field, such as parents, and both, such as Khenpos and Acharyas, are all said to be great. It seems that we have nothing but objects for accumulating sins. In the field of merit, both good and non-good become great, as it is said in the sutras such as the "Sutra of Generating Faith Power," the differences in transformation from a layperson to a Bodhisattva who is transformed by the miraculous power of the Tathagata are all the same. Non-virtuous deeds are like that, and virtuous deeds are also like that, if one prostrates to a deity every day, if one always does this, it will become great because of always doing it.

Furthermore, all virtuous deeds arising from strong faith will become great. All virtuous deeds not suppressed by the antidote of sin will also become great. All virtuous deeds based on previous lives will become great. Similarly, the practice of contemplating karma and its results must rely solely on the words of the Tathagata. The greatness of karma and its results can only be known by the All-Knowing One, and others cannot know it, just like the story of the householder Dpal skyes (Śrīdatta). That is, if that householder were to become a renunciate, he would attain the fruit in this life because that householder, in countless eons past, was born as a pig. At that time, after eating filth, he rubbed the yellow dirt off a stupa with his snout. Only the Bhagavan knew of this virtuous deed, but none of the great Śrāvakas, despite all their powers of clairvoyance, could ascertain it. Therefore, one should be guided by the oral instructions of the Lama, diligently study the Sutras, and constantly contemplate karma and its results. If certainty arises about this, even if some careless actions occur, it will be like shaking the foundation of everything else. The reason why Jowo Atiśa and Geshe Tonpa are so kind is that they placed great importance on karma and its results. The unique phenomena that occurred in Kham and other regions also arose from their emphasis on karma and its results. Apart from that, even if someone is learned in scriptures, possesses great magical powers, has excellent views, has many oral instructions, is well-versed in definitions, relies on the three sections of the Mother Tantra, and so on, Dromtönpa (Dromtön Gyalwai Jungne) said, "Rateng Monastery (Ra-sgreng) places great importance on karma and the guarding of vows. This is different from other monasteries." It is indeed so. This alone is the ultimate point, and it is also difficult to practice because it is both subtle and profound. In the past, whenever Geshe Tonpa saw someone being even slightly negligent about karma and its results, Jowo Atiśa would be very displeased. He said, "Only dependent origination is most profound, only dependent origination is most subtle." Therefore, even if all unintentional actions are smoothed over with confession, the nature of dependent origination cannot be changed by confession. This is also the case for those who rely too much on emptiness and views. Both fire and hand are also empty in terms of phenomena.
