It does not arise from discordant causes created by (irrational attention). It does not arise from arbitrary actions that occur as one pleases. Then, from what does it arise? As it says in the Letter to a Friend: Aggregates are not from will, not from time, not from nature, not from self, not from a lord, not from causelessness, but from ignorance, action, and craving, treasure of wisdom. As it is said, it arises from the power of one's own actions and afflictions. Depending on how virtue and non-virtue are accumulated in the cause, happiness and suffering will arise as the result. Therefore, one should know that happiness and suffering are the result of actions. From the subtlest of actions, one should carefully engage in acceptance and rejection. Belief in action and result also arises from meditation; it does not arise merely from hearing and thinking about it once in a casual way, so one must meditate. One needs to understand this. One needs to hear about this. Therefore, this is the key point of the Lama's instructions. Through reading many sutras and treatises, understanding the acceptance and rejection of cause and effect, based on prior hearing and thinking, one should first contemplate the ripening result of non-virtuous actions. If a mind of fear arises regarding its suffering and the length of life, then initially, one will turn away from the cause. Therefore, one should first meditate on the faults of the result. Moreover, in this life, there is nothing more frightening than death. As Putowa said, birth is more frightening than death. Among births, if one is born in the lower realms, there is nothing more frightening than that. Therefore, one should summarize its suffering, and one should meditate on it from the greatest to the smallest. Regarding this, if we take the suffering of sentient beings in hell as an example, Sharawa said in the Letter to a Friend: Here, the suffering of being stabbed three hundred times in one day with short spears, How can one bear even the smallest suffering of hell, which is incomparable to that? As it is said, human suffering cannot exceed this limit, and even so, it cannot be compared to the smallest suffering of hell. For us now, even if a single spark falls on bare flesh, or a single ember falls on the flesh, how much heat would there be? From the perspective of mindfulness, near the fire of hell, human fire is said to be as cool as snow or clouds. Putowa said that a person whose entire body is burned in fire is like sandalwood Gorshirsha.

If you apply a medicine called "ལྡེ་གུ་" to any part of the body, you will get a moment of coolness. Similarly, it is said that even if any part of a person's body touches the fire while being burned in the hellfire, there is only a slight cool heat wave. Likewise, it is said that one must meditate in detail on all the suffering and lifespan, etc., of all eighteen hell realms. In general, the location of hell is from the fifteenth underground level to 32,000 yojanas below Jambudvipa, where the first hot hell, called the "Reviving Hell," is located. The Abhidharmakosha says, "Twenty thousand yojanas below this is the Avici Hell, and it is the same distance. Above it are seven hells." Therefore, it is also said that 20,000 yojanas below Jambudvipa is the lowest hot hell, called Avici Hell. According to the former explanation, there are 4,000 yojanas from the Reviving Hell to the others. It is said that the cold hells are located directly above, 10,000 yojanas beyond its north side, and some are located by the sea and in other places. According to the Abhidharmakosha, each side of each hot hell has four charcoal pits, etc., for a total of sixteen surrounding hells. From the Smrtyupasthana Sutra, it is also said that there are sixteen additional hells and many other different places. In any case, regarding the suffering of those eighteen hell realms, in the first of the eight hot hells, the Reviving Hell, there are no hell guards or harm from fire. The hell beings see each other as enemies, and whatever they pick up turns into weapons, and they kill each other. Then, a voice comes from the sky saying, "Revive!" After the body revives as before, they kill each other again, dying a hundred times a day and experiencing the suffering of reviving a hundred times. Sharawa said about this, "The Reviving Hell dies a hundred times a day and revives a hundred times. If this were the hell's own day and night, the suffering would not be too great, but if it were a human day and night, it would be unbearable." It is indeed a human day and night. Khenpo Peldenpa of Narthang Monastery said, "Being pierced by three hundred short spears in a day, etc., one can know through these." The second is the Black Line Hell.
