Therefore, no one knows when they will die. The Lord of Death dwells amidst various conditions, like a candle in the wind. Like a candle in the wind or a bee whose flight may be cut short at any moment, because there are many causes of death, no one knows when they will die. Some die in their mother's womb, some die at birth, some die while crawling, some are children, some are youths, some are in their prime, some die in middle age. To live until old age and decrepitude is a rare stroke of luck. We think that because we are young now, we will not die, but how many people die in their mother's womb! We do not think like that now, and instead of doing what we should do, we do what we should not do, thinking: 'This I will do today, this I will do next time, this I will do later.' When people think like this, the Lord of Death, holding a club, looks askance from the side, with angry eyes, secretly mocking in his heart.' As it is said in the letter to the disciple, therefore it is said that no one knows when they will die. At the moment of death, it says in the Bodhicaryāvatāra: 'I lie alone on the bed, though relatives surround me, the pain of cutting off my life force, only I alone experience. When the messengers of Yama arrive, what is the use of relatives, what is the use of friends, only the merit accumulated in the past, can provide protection at that time.' Or: 'Even the bones and flesh born together, will break and separate, what need to mention other friends.' As it is said, even one's own consciousness and the body that has accompanied one from the mother's womb will separate, what need to mention enjoyment and friends? Therefore, only the Holy Dharma is the only thing that will not disappear. Therefore, death is inevitable. As Potowa said: 'What will I become tomorrow or the day after?' As it is said, no one knows when they will die, but to think that one will not die now is completely inverted thinking. For one's own nature, tomorrow or the day after, this life or the next, which will come first is unknown. Even a month, half a month, ten days, which will come first, this life or the next, is unknown. Even those who have recovered from illness may die from a sudden disease. In short, from birth onwards, death is certain. For those who are born, there will inevitably be old age, sickness and death, there will be no non-aging, non-sickening, non-dying.

Sa! What's the use of praying for good wishes? It is said that Sharawa told a group of Khampa merchants: Just as you merchants stay and travel on the road every day, the cycle of birth and death is also like that. When one dies, this corpse also, the body eventually turns to ashes, eventually dries up and eventually rots, ultimately unclean and without essence, completely destroyed and decayed, know that it is the nature of separate dispersion. Just as the teacher said in the Letter to a Friend, if cremated, the corpse turns to ashes, or the corpse changes from swelling to becoming dust. Therefore, one must also contemplate impermanence. Sharawa said that in India, after going to the cemetery, when will the bones of others and my own body become the same law of destruction? Just as he said, the monks went to the cemetery, saw the new and old corpses, and thought that I am also such a Dharma nature, etc. We do not have the habit of going to the cemetery, so from the time we can remember, how many men, women, and monks have died in our hometown, we count with rosary beads, thinking that I am also such a Dharma nature, etc. When Geshe Phuchungwa was living in Daga Monastery, when he went to Niyo Ri Angar to get butter, he also spread out his fingers and counted how many people had died in his hometown, saying that this one also died and that one also died. When he came back, even if rain dripped on him, he would not wipe it off, but roll up the cushion, lean on it, and just make a sound. Also, Phuchungwa lived in Wobo, and Putowa lived in Nyenpo. Sharawa and the two of them did their homework on the top of Nyenpo Mountain in the morning and afternoon. Behind the rock, there were many mud stupas or pagodas, saying that this person named so-and-so died, and that person named so-and-so died, thinking, "Ayamayo, once dead, you can't see it anymore," you must think like this. Similarly, external impermanence also symbolizes internal impermanence, so the color changes of the external container world in spring, summer, autumn, and winter
