It is not certain that one thing suits all situations, just as one medicine does not necessarily cure all diseases. Loving-kindness for those with attachment and aversion for those with hatred are not suitable. All methods of counting breaths are also not suitable for those with great ignorance. Only the two views of selflessness are praised as aimless targets, but if taught when the time is not ripe, there will be two faults, as stated in the Garland of Precious Gems and Engaging in the Middle Way. However, dependent origination is suitable for all situations. In the Stages of Meditation, it is also mentioned to focus on the Dharma of the twelve branches of scripture, or to focus on the aggregates, etc., or to focus on the image of the Buddha, all of which are completely correct. Showing guidance to others requires not only words, but also a process of learning from the future, experiencing, and passing on from one generation to another, which is a guidance with the meaning of realization. The so-called "experiencing samadhi," such as meditating with a stone in hand, or meditating by projecting consciousness onto a portrait, etc., have been mentioned many times before. It is not enough to be satisfied with just these, because these are not the basis for everyone to determine, so these are not worth doing as previous practices. There are also some who say that everything is emptiness, and therefore abandon all methods. There are also some who say that it is non-conceptual, and therefore stop all concepts, but this also does not work. Geshe Putowa said that there was someone who meditated day and night without knowing the difference because the wind channels went into the eyes, but even a little bit of desire was not fulfilled by doing that. As it is said, if there is a part that practices the eight applications of abandoning the five faults, that is truly famous. Therefore, focusing on any target and placing the mind in virtue is also the reason why "abandoning the five faults, the eight applications are born from the cause." Therefore, one should abide in the manner of practicing the eight applications of abandoning the five faults. These five faults are: laziness, forgetting the instructions, sinking, excitement, non-application, and application. The first of these is: both laziness and lack of diligence. If these two exist, one cannot enter into meditation. Even if one enters, if one forgets the instructions, one will fall into the abyss of doubt and will not be able to focus on the target. Even if one focuses once, one will sink because of being separated from mindfulness and awareness.

If I become agitated, I will regress from before. When dullness and agitation arise, if you do not strive to counteract them, you cannot abandon dullness and agitation. When there are none of these, while abiding in the object of focus, you search and then lose the object of focus and wander off. Therefore, the *Distinguishing the Middle from the Extremes* says: "Laziness and instructions, forgetfulness and dullness, agitation and non-application, and application, these are considered the five faults." It also says that the eight applications for abandoning them also come from there: "The place and abiding therein, the cause and the result as well, not forgetting the object of focus, and realizing dullness and agitation, applying effort to abandon them, and abiding naturally when calmed." And the commentary says: "The place of effort is desire, abiding is effort, the cause of abiding desire is faith, that is, if one is convinced, one will manifestly desire. The result of abiding effort is great pliancy, that is, because of initiating diligence, one obtains the distinction of samadhi." It is said that the meaning is that initially there is no samadhi, the mind is distracted and there are those faults mentioned earlier, and if there is samadhi, one is convinced that the previous benefits will arise. Believing that the practice of samadhi depends on the instructions that truly show the object of focus, relying on this faith, the desire to obtain it arises. If there is that, one initiates diligence for the sake of obtaining samadhi. After initiating diligence, one obtains a small stage of physical and mental pliancy. These four become the antidote to laziness. Abandon forgetfulness with the mindfulness that does not forget the instructions that show the object of focus of samadhi. With vigilance, observe whether you have become dull or agitated, or whether you have not become either of those and are holding the object of focus well. After observing in this way, if you become dull or agitated, you will realize it. If you become those, then practice the antidote to dullness and the things that become obstacles, such as the six recollections. The antidote to agitation is to practice contemplating aversion, etc. From what is said, after practicing the six recollections, etc., after dullness is removed, even walking with a slight force requires great power of habit. Now, it has not reached that point yet, therefore, as an antidote to both of those, one should remember death.
