Fourth, explaining the actual content of the treatise to be explained. Fourth, explaining the actual content of the treatise to be explained. Among these, there are three: the title, the translation homage, and the explanation of the meaning of the text. 1. The Title. In Sanskrit: Bodhi Patha Pradipa. (Byang chub lam gyi sgron ma) (Lamp for the Path to Enlightenment). Regarding this, there are two aspects: the necessity of writing the title at the beginning and the explanation of the meaning of the title. The first is: Sharawa said: Geshé Dromtönpa's intention was that from the beginning in Sanskrit to the end of this text, everything is explained by repeatedly focusing on what to meditate on or practice from this very day. Therefore, the translators, by the decree of the translator, wrote the Sanskrit at the beginning, which is not the invention of all translators. The former kings, ministers, and Bodhisattvas consulted and decided to write it down with three great necessities: to know and repay kindness, to establish a foundation, and to overcome laziness. Among these, the first, the necessity of knowing and repaying kindness, is: If one practices the human Dharma well, the journey to the heavenly realm is not far. From the ladder of humans and gods, if one climbs, liberation is at hand. As it is said, before the Holy Dharma was spread, all of Tibet was no different from animals, not knowing where the previous life came from and where the next life would go, nor knowing from which actions happiness and suffering arise. They lacked discernment regarding the nature of Samsara and Nirvana and the cause and effect of the two, and were enveloped in the darkness of ignorance. Practicing the human Dharma well, thereby going to the heavenly realm, is the place to accomplish happiness. Relying on the ladder of the two, is the place to accomplish liberation, is the place to accomplish omniscience, and the slight arising of the light of wisdom is the kindness of the Holy Dharma. This Dharma also originated in India, so one should be grateful to the Indians. Moreover, those who came before called even the beggars of India "Acharya," placing them at the head of the line, and many, like Shang Chenpo, vowed to offer gold to every Indian who came, all of which was to repay kindness.

has been completed. The Indian language script is written at the beginning of the treatise, which is to teach all of us later generations to learn in the same way. Previously, during an assembly in Do Kham (mdo khams), when many monks gathered together, an Acarya came and asked as the first question in the morning, "How are the rules arranged?" When he himself sat in the next position, others said to him, "You should not sit here, there is someone else." He became angry. He said, "When we open the Dharma text, if there is Indian language at the beginning, I will not sit here, and if there is not, I will not leave." Such a person is only a teaching for us to think about, because he is qualified to sit in the front row. The main point of the scripture is explained up to this point. What we ourselves should practice is that whether it is the cause of encountering our own Dharma, or the cause of encountering harm, we should know and repay kindness. By doing so, all merits and happiness will arise. If one does not know how to repay the kindness of the Dharma, merits and happiness will not arise, and even the little that has arisen before will disappear, which is the law of nature. Therefore, for the kindness of worldly food and clothing, and the necessary help such as care during illness, one should treat them as if one has not repaid the kindness. If one knows and repays the kindness of these, it is better than worldly praise. Just as the saying goes, "If water is poured on a relative, the relative will also curse the enemy." Later, there will also be help for him, and all perfections will increase like the waxing moon. Because these are the main fields of merit, merit will also become immeasurable and so on. As it is also said in the Hundred Wisdoms and the Verses of the Drum Sound, "Knowing kindness and repaying kindness, not doing ungrateful deeds, auspiciousness and protection, always accompany this person." It is said that auspiciousness is for this life, and protection is for the next life. If one does not repay kindness to them, even if there is no displeasure in this life, there will be no help for him in the future, and such a person will be like a shameless, faceless, inconsiderate person who does not know how to look back. They will say, "There is no difference between anointing with oil and anointing with water." All perfections will also diminish like the waning moon, which is the greatness of dependent origination. Therefore, it is also said in the Hundred Wisdoms and the Verses of the Drum Sound, "The ocean and Mount Meru"
