Just as it is, the Buddha said, "One will know." Like, "The mind of a distracted person dwells between the teeth of afflictions." For a person whose mind is distracted, pure discipline will not arise, and the mind of enlightenment will not be established. Therefore, for these people, there is also a need for calm abiding that can suppress afflictions. The sign of having attained calm abiding is that even if the body is trained like the tip of a mong, and one meditates with the crown of the head touching the tip, one can remain as long as one wishes. Because the mind can be tamed, one can abide on any object of focus as long as one wishes. Now, it seems that people claim to have attained calm abiding without any of these signs. Geshe Tonpa said, "If it is false pride, it is okay, but if not, it is breaking the Pratimoksha vow." He once said to a young monk from Yungwa Monastery, "In this Sangha, you are the youngest, try to live to be about eighty years old." Formerly, an old Upasaka Geshe from Drom said, "If someone says they have attained calm abiding, but afflictions arise in their mindstream, then know that they are possessed by a demon. If someone says they have seen the face of a Yidam deity, but afflictions arise in their mindstream, then know that they are possessed by a demon. Say this, and then repeat my words." It is said that he said this. As for whether to repeat it or not, I do not know. Khampa Lungpa lived to be over ninety years old and repeated these words. If the mind truly abides, even if one has not attained the main practice, one can suppress afflictions, and understanding of knowable things will become easier and easier. Attachment to all desires will also become smaller and smaller. Now, however, people claim to be meditating even when afflictions are becoming stronger and attachment to all desires is becoming greater, and he said that they will not reach their destination. Third, explaining the training in higher wisdom. It is divided into five parts: the relationship between higher mind and wisdom training, the explanation that both should not be abandoned because separation of means and wisdom binds, the difference between means and wisdom, the order of practicing the two, and the explanation of wisdom training itself. First, explaining the relationship between higher mind and wisdom training: Without the practice of the Perfection of Wisdom, the obscurations will never be exhausted. Therefore, in order to completely abandon the obscurations of afflictions and knowledge, one should always practice the Perfection of Wisdom with means.

Thus it was said. That is to say, as just mentioned, even if one trains in higher discipline and higher mind, because one is separated from the practice of meditating on the Perfection of Wisdom, one cannot abandon the clinging to reality, and therefore the root of its obscurations will not be exhausted. If the two obscurations are not exhausted, one is still a samsaric being. Therefore, due to ignorance of the Four Noble Truths, the obscuration of afflictions, which arises in the form of attachment and aversion, and the conceptual thought of the obscuration of knowledge, which relies on clinging to reality, in order to completely abandon these two, one should rely on calm abiding and meditate on the yoga of the Perfection of Wisdom, which sees the selflessness of persons and phenomena. If there is no calm abiding, just as a butter lamp is placed in the wind, wisdom will not clearly understand the meaning of selflessness. In this way, the meditation on wisdom should not be separated from skillful means, but should always be practiced together with the stages of the three types of individuals and the skillful means of the five perfections. This is what Sharawo said: "Even if the first two trainings only subdue and suppress the afflictions, without the yoga of the Perfection of Wisdom, the root of all afflictions, the view of self, is not abandoned." Though the forest fire of meditation repeatedly, Burns the forest of faults, If the root of the view of self is not uprooted, It will grow vigorously from the front, as if moistened by rain. Thus it was said. Even if the fire burns the branches of the forest, if the root is not pulled out, when it is moistened by rain and so on, the ashes will become fertilizer, and it will grow back even better. Similarly, if one does not abandon the view of self, even if one attains meditative absorption and the formless realms, and suppresses the afflictions, the afflictions will later arise strongly again, according to the circumstances. Even if one only meditates on the selflessness of persons, if one does not abandon the clinging to the aggregates and so on as being true, then, As long as there is clinging to the aggregates, There will be self-grasping towards them. If there is self-grasping, there will be karma, And from that karma, there will be rebirth. Thus it was said, one will not even be able to abandon the view of self itself. It is like mistaking a rope for a person, and when one goes close to it, one will know; but if one does not eliminate this illusion, one will mistake it again when one goes far away. Even if one is made to abandon the view of self, the obscuration of knowledge will
