Meditate on how much suffering one must endure if born in the three lower realms. Then, realizing that the only refuge that can save me from the suffering of the three lower realms is the Three Jewels, cultivate taking refuge in them. Then, they save from the lower realms by averting the cause of those realms; therefore, it is also said to understand the causes of the lower and higher realms and to abandon and cultivate them. Then, I am wearied by the suffering of impermanence and the continuous chain of cause and effect in existence, and by cultivating renunciation, I desire to be liberated from it. And when I wander in samsara, all sentient beings have been my mothers, and when my mother wanders in samsara, I meditate on compassion, measuring it by my own experience, as she is tormented by various sufferings. Then, taking all of that to heart, I generate the great mind of enlightenment, thinking that I myself must attain that state in order to establish all sentient beings in Buddhahood. Then, realizing that I must engage in the cause of attaining great enlightenment for the sake of others, I take the vows of engagement and train in the superior discipline and the two minds. When these methods become stable, one cannot attain omniscience by merely relying on methods alone without abandoning the grasping of things as real. And also knowing that samsara is long, the sentient beings to be tamed are numerous, and their actions are evil, when one is greatly tormented by the suffering of one's own samsara, like in the story of the monkey, one becomes discouraged thinking that one cannot bear the burden of so many sentient beings in endless samsara, and there is a danger of even losing compassion. Therefore, first meditate on the absence of a self of persons in one's own being. Even if one meditates in this way, if loving-kindness and compassion do not become stable, hold sentient beings as real persons and cultivate these two. Then, when sentient beings and all their sufferings are considered to be real, one might even think that one cannot eliminate the suffering of sentient beings, to the point of giving rise to sorrow. At this time, also meditate on the absence of a self of persons in other sentient beings. Then, even if one dharma is considered to be real, one might think that one cannot eliminate the suffering of what is real. At this time, meditate on the absence of a self of phenomena in oneself and all sentient beings.
