Because without meditating on the selflessness of phenomena, one cannot abandon [afflictions]. In order to abandon all obscurations, one should meditate on it. According to the system of Master Nagarjuna, even the Hearers realize the selflessness of phenomena. However, they only realize the selflessness of phenomena related to their own basis, and do not realize the selflessness of all phenomena. Moreover, because they lack great skillful means, they are considered not to have abandoned the obscuration of knowledge. Therefore, meditating on the yoga of the Mother [Prajnaparamita] is not merely wisdom, but should be meditated on together with skillful means. And it is not just once with skillful means, but always with skillful means. As it is said here, the skillful means are: by meditating on actions, causes, and results, one's mind reaches a state of not straying from the Dharma through the four non-virtuous actions; by meditating on all of existence as the nature of suffering, one has no desire for the three realms even in dreams, and in order to abandon its cause, one strives to practice the three trainings more urgently than putting out a fire that has suddenly broken out on one's head or clothes; by knowing all sentient beings of the three realms as one's parents, and contemplating how they are tormented by various sufferings in existence, and comparing it to one's own experience, one develops perfect compassion. In order to protect them, one vows to attain the wisdom of omniscience and trains in the five precepts; because one must be diligent in the cause of wanting to obtain the result, one trains well in the three trainings of morality, which become a collection of calm abiding. Based on that, one accomplishes calm abiding. Based on that, one meditates on insight wisdom. What precedes all of that is also the means to seek refuge from poverty and fear through meditating on mindfulness of death, knowing that the Three Jewels are refuge, and going for refuge to them, which is the only important means to achieve Buddhahood. Furthermore, from Engaging in the Middle Way, if there is no generosity, one must look to others for sustenance, and emptiness will be interrupted. If there is no morality, one will fall into the lower realms, and meditating on it will be cut off. If there is no patience, one will go to the lower realms, and even if one is born as a human, one will be born with an ugly form, the lama will not pay attention, and one will not obtain the instructions for meditating on emptiness. It is said that Lord Atisha said, 'Because I am handsome, all the lamas cherish me.'

Without compassion, one falls into the Lesser Vehicle, and even if one meditates on emptiness, one will not attain the fruit of Buddhahood. If one does not dedicate the root of virtue to the Great Bodhi, then even meditating on emptiness will be interrupted in the intermediate state. If one does not respect Bodhisattvas, one will be born in a remote land and will not encounter a virtuous friend who teaches emptiness, therefore it is said that all of these are necessary. In the Stages of Meditation, it is also said that at the time of application, one should be motivated by the mind of enlightenment and precede it with the seven-branch offering. Then, relying on the single-pointed Samatha that focuses on the object, one should meditate on patience and Vipassana wisdom. At the end, one should generate compassion for sentient beings who have not realized emptiness, thinking: I will perfect my two accumulations, attain omniscience, and comprehend their Dharma nature. Then, one should prostrate, make offerings, and praise all the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas of the ten directions, and dedicate the root of virtue. In the post-attainment stage, it is said that one should train in all the aspects of skillful means without any incompleteness. In the Bodhicaryavatara, it is also said that everything from the mind of enlightenment to meditation is the meaning of wisdom. Furthermore, it is said that without conventional terms, one cannot realize the ultimate truth, and all of these are the meaning of skillful means. But we, who call ourselves the Great Madhyamikas, say that nothing is needed. However, not all Dharmas are taught in this way. Thus, it is important to practice with skillful means, and first and foremost, to stabilize these skillful means without destroying the view of self. In the Sixty Stanzas of Reasoning, it is also said: "To seek that very thing, first, one should say that everything exists. When the meanings are understood, and there is no attachment, then one should say that it is empty." Jowo also said, as it is said in the Sutra of Vimalakirti: "The view of the aggregates is the seed of the Buddha." It is just as it is said in the sutra. Therefore, first, one should meditate on the impermanence of me going from this world to another, thereby generating fear and dread, seeking refuge, and meditating on taking refuge in the Buddha. Then, because the Buddha protects with the Dharma, one should meditate on the karmic results of if I do this action, I will be born in the lower realms, and so on.
