Again, meditate. Meditating on these two in sequence is like conveying the news of the death of a king's consort. The king's consort, deeply attached to her perfect beauty and wealth, resided there inevitably. Sometimes, due to necessity, the king went to war in another country, and afterwards the consort died. If this were reported from the beginning, the king would vomit blood and die, such grief would arise. A minister skilled in strategy sent a messenger to inquire whether the king was well. The reply was that all was well, except that a large boil had appeared on the consort's forehead. Then, a second, third, and fourth messenger were sent, inquiring as before. They learned that the boil had turned into a pustule, the pustule had spread and covered the face, and the consort's face had festered to the point of exposing bone. Repeating this report, the king's mind became weary, and he thought it would be better if the consort were dead. At that point, it was reported that the consort had passed away, and the king was overjoyed, without any grief arising. Similarly, when grief arises from the suffering of oneself and others, because the selflessness of the sufferer is shown, at the time of becoming very happy, the two selflessnesses are shown. Shantideva said: "Just as oneself and others do not desire suffering and fear, what difference is there between oneself and others that one protects oneself but not others?" He also said: "If one can equalize oneself and others, the mind of enlightenment will surely arise." This is the instruction for meditating on the mind of enlightenment. For beginners, if one meditates in this way, the mind of enlightenment will not become stable. As Jowo said, one must meditate in that way. Second, because method and wisdom are separated and binding, it is shown that neither should be abandoned. Wisdom devoid of method, and method devoid of wisdom, why are they said to be binding? Therefore, neither should be abandoned. So it is said. That is to say, as shown before, wisdom is in accordance with method, and method is also in accordance with wisdom. If it is not so, what fault is there in separating the two? If one only meditates on emptiness, the wisdom separated from method, such as the stages of the three types of persons, one will be bound to the extreme of peace. Wisdom that understands the selflessness of persons and phenomena,

Merely becoming accustomed to methods that are separate from meditating on emptiness will also bind one to the extreme of existence. For what reason? Because the sutra known as "Immaculate Fame" states: "Wisdom without method binds one to the Hearers, and method without wisdom binds one to samsara." Therefore, those who seek enlightenment, which is nirvana that does not abide in those two extremes, should not abandon both method and wisdom. Meditate with method accompanied by wisdom, and with wisdom accompanied by method. That is to say, when method has become stable, it is also meditation when it is shown by the wisdom that knows the two selflessnesses. At first, like a person's feet, rely on method and then meditate on wisdom, and rely on wisdom and then meditate on method, alternating. Having become accustomed in that way, when one has become proficient, meditate simultaneously like a bird's wings. Even when one is becoming accustomed to the various methods, there is no attachment to the substance of the three spheres. And even when one is becoming accustomed to the wisdom of emptiness, one does not abandon compassion. Those objects that have been made the object of method are meditated upon without any focus, during both meditative equipoise and subsequent attainment. Thus spoke Sharawa. Third, showing the distinction between method and wisdom: In order to dispel the doubts of what is wisdom and what is method, I will clearly explain the actual distinction between methods and wisdom. It is said: All virtuous dharmas, such as the perfection of generosity, excluding the perfection of wisdom, are taught as methods by the Victorious Ones. That is to say, from the sutras and treatises, several objects to be combined with method and wisdom are spoken of. If there is doubt as to what wisdom is and what method is in the context of this text, in order to dispel those doubts, I will clearly explain the actual distinction of what the methods are and what the wisdom is in the context of this text. So, what is it? It is that all those that are counted as virtuous dharmas, such as the perfection of generosity, excluding the perfection of wisdom, are taught as methods by the Victorious Buddhas, the Blessed Ones. This is in terms of that, and from the force of directly showing what method is in the context of this text, it can be known.
