There is a hut like this to the north of Jedan (rje gdan). It is said that the monk Sonam (bsod nams) lives there. If you ask what causes him to remember his past lives, it is said that it is because he recites the 'Samantabhadra's Prayer of Good Conduct.' It is also said that when Jowo (jo bo, Atisha) came to Tibet, he was about thirty years old. It is also said that reciting the 'Six Doors Dharani' and others can also help one remember past lives. We can also do these things, so we must strive. In general, remembering past lives can perfect the accumulation of merit, and it is also necessary to generate renunciation from samsara, and to be assisted by pure discipline and bodhicitta. If these are not present, even in hell, among the pretas, and in the heavens, there are those who remember their past lives, but that does not become a cause for perfecting the accumulation of merit. When the abbot of Vikramashila was reborn as a preta, someone asked him, 'You have gained such certainty about cause and effect, why do you still do things that harm others?' He said, 'I did that when I was ten years old, but our preta minds have no autonomy.' It is said that when reborn in those realms, even if one knows the harm of misdeeds, one cannot stop committing them. Third, explaining how to strive. If one wants to cultivate calm abiding, it is necessary to abide in its accumulations and limbs. And explaining the object of focus for cultivating calm abiding. First: Because the limbs of calm abiding are completely lacking, even if one strives to cultivate, even after thousands of years, samadhi will not be accomplished. Therefore, the 'Chapter on the Accumulations of Samadhi' says: One should abide well in the limbs that are spoken of. This means that to cultivate calm abiding, one must abide in its accumulations and limbs. If the accumulations and limbs of calm abiding are completely lacking, that is, not possessed, then even if one strives to cultivate the object of focus for cultivating calm abiding in the way described earlier, even after thousands of years, the samadhi of calm abiding will not be accomplished. Therefore, if one wants to cultivate calm abiding, one must first abide in the accumulations and limbs of calm abiding that are spoken of in the 'Chapter on the Accumulations of Samadhi.' Regarding this, Sharawa (sha ra ba) said, 'Is the 'Chapter on the Accumulations of Samadhi' the one written by Acharya Bodhibhadra (Byang chub bzang po), which speaks of the nine accumulations of calm abiding?' Some also say that there is a sutra. Some also say that there are thirteen accumulations in the 'Hearer's Ground.'
